    I think numbers would show that more people vote democrat for a handout more than anything.

    That is interesting but it reminds me of freakonomics a bit. Correlation and Causation here. What's the true cause of the trend? It could be that people tend to search for the lesser known candidate. Obama in 2008 and Romney in 2012. Who knows.
