Agree, the question is can you do both? There is no denying that there is a trend towards read option/mobile type QB'S and offense. Can you be the big physical D that beats Bama and ND while containing teams like AU and A&M? I think you can, but you will need outstanding recruiting, outstanding coaching and quality player development. Remember even Bama has had trouble with AU and A&M.
I never had a problem with smaller faster safeties, outside linebackers and maybe tall thin fast defensive ends, but the Mike linebacker needs to be 235 to 250, and DT's need to be large and in charge.
The DT's need to be big run-stoppers who can tie up four offensive linemen. But a modern middle linebacker has to be able to drop into pass coverage half the time and big 250 pounders can get beaten by the fast backs they have to defend unless they are freakishly fast. Defensive ends simply have to be big AND quick. And that combination is hard to find.
Some seem to forget, Brick played for Chief when he was in college. Oh, both picked up things along the way coaching. The Valentine kid was going to help plug the middle this year, but you know the story. Godchaux coming straight out of high school had to play way too much this year. Too many were slow to develop on the DL.
its almost impossible to get the exact mix of size and speed across the board. but there is no one correct way. buhlee dat. if there was youd be rich selling the formula to dcs across this great land. its preference. and i prefer the biggest guys of anyone with usain bolt speed. and his height while we're at it.
