Catchable passes are, well, catchable. While it adds to completions when the QB can throw past the proper shoulder and hit the receiver on the run, the error goes to the receiver. Look at JL's face and demeanor when he sees those drops: he doesn't curse or show anger; he is a leader! I am still impressed. The O needs to tighten up their act because the serious SEC is coming to visit.
I was there when Matt threw his body into the game to win the SEC. I was there when he, Matt, won the NChampionship. I saw LSU fawn over world class Russell, who couldn't make it in NFL. I was there rootin tootin for Hillard. Just because a player is in a position doesn't mean squat. It has taken miracle finishes the last few years for the tigers to have the record they do , Geaux............ Tigers................
You and others seem to be talking around this point but not quite getting it; we are only low in the offensive rankings in terms of yards (19th in scoring, 43rd in passing efficiency). But that is only when looking at the stats in a vaccuum. In the WVU game (as an example), we had as I recall about a 29.4 yard advantage in starting field position. Now, even though WVU is a tougher than average opponent (national average, not LSU or SEC "average"), I took the conservative estimate of 20 yards average starting field position advantage over our opponents due to turnovers, net punting, etc. That would mean we would have an average of 20 fewer yards to go for each TD. We've had 22 touchdown drives, which works out to about 88 yards per game of "lost" yardage that we never got the opportunity to gain due to field position advantage. Adding that yardage back into our stats would move us up to a top 40 total offense team, despite having played one of the toughest schedules in the country. That's not super-stellar or anything, but it's pretty respectable for a team who's strength is defense. Especially considering that we've only played one real cupcake (two if you count Kentucky, but they're no Kent State or Western Kentucky). I don't think our offense is in trouble. I haven't seen us really struggle to score points in any situation where we really needed to. The only time I actually saw us appear to struggle was in the Miss. State game when we were bound and determined to run on them in an apparent effort to prove that we can eventually run on a defense even if they completely sell out to stop the run. Which we did. And other than that, we have not shown much difficulty scoring points in rather abundant numbers. So I'd say don't sweat it, we're in good shape!
If you read my posts on the 2 threads discussing these topics you would see I completely get it and that point is not avoided and even compared to last year when we had the same defensive/special teams advantage. Never said it was in trouble either just would like to see it less conservative/opened up more. We also haven't had a game where we consistently had to fight to sustain long drives which is a greta thing but something we still have to see after this young season. These boards are for discussing things that may happen down the line to go along with current discussions.
Thank you for attempting to tell it like it is. This group wants a conspiracy. LSU's WR's have been dropping passes for years (see Davis, Byrd, LaFell, Toliver, etc. most recently) Passes have been thrown behind, low, high, into coverage, etc. I don't hear anyone mentioning the pass Randle came down with in double-coverage for 37 yds. Or the 1 yard bubble screens that Beckham turns into big gains. Or the pass that across the middle that got Landry flattened. It's one thing to catch passes in practice with on one covering you. Game time is something different. I bet Lee doesn't throw off of his back foot or rush his throws during warm-ups. No why? Because no one from the other team is in pursuit.
We'll never open up the offense as long as Miles is on the sidelines. It's just what it is. He loves to run the ball, play defense and special teams. A formula that has worked for 7 years at LSU now. The one year we had 5 losses in the regular season, our defense was not up to snuff. Does this offense have the ability to put up 420 yards a game? Yes. Will it? No. Case in point. The Ole Miss game last year, we were forced offensively to keep being aggressive in the play calling and we racked up over 40 points and over 450 yards. Had our defense played great, we would have put up less than 300 yards. It's up to Les Miles and Coach Stud how productive our offense can be.
