So you mean to tell me that Charles Woodson was the ONLY defensive player that was the best player in that year? Face it, its more of an offensive players award.

I wouldn't get your hopes up of having Dorsey's jersey retired.

During his career at LSU, DT Dorsey had 12 sacks. DT Anthony "Booger" McFarland (1995-98) had 17 sacks (the LSU school record for a DT).

At LSU, DT Dorsey had 26 tackles for loss. DT McFarland had 55 tackles for loss (the overall LSU school record).

If we didn't retire McFarland's number, why in the hell would we retire Dorsey, who is not even the best DT LSU has had?

McFarland was a 1st Round Draft pick as well.

    http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/heisman/heisman_trophy_winners.htm

Once again, if they don't feel like they have to give it to an offensive player, then why have 71 of the 72 Heisman winners been offensive players? Even when Woodson won it in 97 he played on offense, so he had to double up too. I'm telling you, if a defensive player has an unbelievable season he will be rewarded with his respective defensive awards but truth be told, this is an award that always goes to an offensive player. Because the media will always push that glamor angle.

Elvis Dumervil in 2005 tied the NCAA record for sacks in a season with 20 (I think that qualifies as unbelievable), yet he was not on any Heisman ballots. He won a bunch of defensive awards but no Heisman. There's no doubt many more. Would I like to see a defensive player win it? No doubt, they deserve just as much, if not more publicity than the offense.

Ask Minnesota's GM how much they value Pat Williams and Kevin Williams. Great, standout defensive tackles are harder to find in the NFL than QB's.

But that's all besides the point, the point of this thread was to congratulate Dorsey on his award and the many more he will win tonight :geaux:

Yes, I know who Sedrick Ellis is, he had a lot of hype coming into this season as well. But my point still stands; the SEC coaches know how good Glenn Dorsey is. Thats why they voted him the best, stats dont' tell the whole story about Dorsey. He commands so many double teams and that's why his stats aren't the greatest. And like you mentioned he's been playing very hurt the past few games since Auburn. That's why I said it's so hard to judge a player's value to a team. All the voters know that Dorsey gets a lot of double teams but they have seen what he could do one-on-one and that's why they voted for him.

Re: Glenn Dorsey wins Lombardi Award

Look, like i told you, if a defensive player has an unbelievable year, they will give him the Heisman -- because the Heisman voters, like the rest of us, want to see more defensive players winning the Heisman. When Junior Charles Woodson won the Heisman (433 first place votes), that was a joke. He won it over freaking Senior Peyton Manning of Tennessee (281 first place votes). But Woodson had an unbelievable year for a defensive guy, and like I've been trying to explain to you over and over, if a defensive player has an unbelievable year, they will give him the Heisman because the Heisman voters, like the rest of us, want to see more defensive players winning the Heisman. Do you honestly think that Woodson was a more valuable player to Michigan than Senior Peyton Manning was to Tennessee?

P.S. By the way, I was all for Woodson winning the Heisman that year, because I, like the rest of us, like seeing a defensive guy win it.

You think Dorsey is regretting coming back for his senior season in lieu of a big payday in the NFL?

    Hells no.

Had Dorsey not gotten hurt, I am convinced he would have been invited to New York. The media was building him up week by week, and of course it didn't hurt that he was on national TV just about every week. Its too damn bad Tubs had to call for the chop block play.

Hopefully next year we find a way for an LSU player to accidentally run into him on the sidelines and tear Tub-o-shyt's ACL or break one of his huge eardrums.

Re: Glenn Dorsey wins Lombardi Award

I think GD is very deserving and a great player/rep for LSU. He'll have a great career. More importantly he seems to be a genuinely good person with a lot of character.

Sed Ellis anchored the #2 Defense in the country and Pac10 Coaches selected him as Defensive POTY. His stats were almost identical to GD and he was also double teamed on a regular basis. Can't figure out how he didn't even make the top 5 list for the Nagurski.

Both Dorsey and Ellis are expected to go high in the draft so I hope both are healthy and have a solid combine performance.
