If there ever is a playoff system the conference championship games will have to be discarded and the regular season will have to be reduced from 12 to 11 games. Otherwise, Dorsey is right. The schedule would just be too much.

Particularly in the SEC. The SEC champs shouldn't have to play three more games to claim a national title.

I don't like the playoff idea anyway. The BCS system isn't perfect. Playoff systems won't be perfect either. Personally, I think the playoff idea (short of an undoable 8 team bracket) would still invite a whole bunch of moaning.

    Let it be.

He makes a valid argument. This ain't the NFL, thats really the sole concern I've shared about a playoff. Not to mention the increased risk of injury to quality players. But, I still think there can be some sort of compromise, should they (the NCAA) want to do it.

I agree. I am not in favor of playing 12 games in the regular season. 13 games total is plenty. They should not allow 12 games in the reg. season and expect these kids to go to class and make grades. This is NOT the NFL. Rant off.

have to admit, I've never thought of it from this perspective. I've always been in favor of an 8 team playoff myself. but, that's an excellent point houtiger, worth heavy consideration in regarding a playoff. I guess sometimes we need to be reminded why these kids are actually here (most of them anyways).

The university presidents have been saying that having a playoff would create a schedule that was too long. Unfortunately, they gave up that arguement when they approved the 12-game regular season.

An 8 team playoff is probably the right amount if you were to have one.

And it was sour grapes for the UGA president to say it. Thankfully someone else noticed.

In an 8 team playoff, the winner would not necessarily be the best team. Injuries, turnovers, and luck would all play a big part. A playoff would reward the team that was able to stay healthy, and it would make the regular season a little less important. Think of it this way, would a team (that is undefeated and assured of being in the top 8), rest its best players the last 1 or 2 games of the season, knowing they were about to enter a playoff for the NC?

The system is not great, but it is better than what we used to have. As stated, this is not the NFL. There is so much tradition that would be tainted by a playoff system. The bowl season is great, and I would hate to see it lose its appeal. At this point I am iffy about a plus one system. That would mean the SEC champ would have to win 3 games after the regular season to win the NC, (the SECCG, the bowl game to get into the NCG, and the plus one BCSCG).

Since we have won 2, it seems to be working fine for us, doesn't it?

Much as I want to see some sort of playoff this is certainly very true. But there are those that would argue that sort of thing is exactly what happens under the present system. I see where you're going with this though, when it comes right down to it, its the "acceptable risk" factor. Another factor is this, I think a lot of seniors who would have otherwise stayed with their schools though their sr year would be temped to jump into the Pros early. Kids who have their eyes on an NFL career wouldn't want to be exposed to possibly getting hurt under that sort of system, and ending that chance. If the school or the NCAA stopped the ability for Srs to leave their Jr year (although this would have to be some sort of legal compromise with the NFL) I think this too would backfire. Unfortunately, as bad as I want a playoff system it does open up a huge can of worms.

Re: Dorsey not in favor of playoff?

The counterargument is that Division II and III has playoffs and those players are obviously at school as well. Anyone know how exactly Div II/III's playoffs work? If they can do it I don't see why Division I can't

P.S.: I know they don't call it Div I/II etc but who cares
