My soon to be brother in law was at that game. For some reason whenever my sister brings him I get waaaaaayyyyy to drunk.
Just a note, but it may apply here as well. Sport Science did a study on free throw shooting, and determined that noise or movement can alter a shooter's % as much as 10-20%. In that instance, the fans absolutely matter. As for football, if a WR cannot hear the play call or "hike" then he will be that half a step slower off the line. If it's an Oline player, the advantage for the defense is even higher. The noise can affect play in a measurable way.
I went through the STRIPES program before my freshman year at LSU, and they took us to Tiger Stadium once when no one else was in there. We had a group of about 50 or so people in the north end zone bleachers. In order to show us what makes Tiger Stadium so loud they had us all scream at the top of our lungs toward the south end zone for about 5 seconds and then immediately all stop on command. When we stopped screaming you could hear the echo bounce off the south end zone and come back at us as loud as it was originally. Multiply that to equal 92,000 fans and it is easy to see why opponents hate playing LSU.
The Mountaineers are aware that Tiger Stadium has been called “the loudest place on earth” by college football enthusiasts. It once got so loud, seismographic instruments on campus registered vibrations similar to a small earthquake. Still, they say they won’t be intimidated. “We’ve never been in that kind of atmosphere. … I’m expecting a crazy one,” West Virginia standout running back Noel Devine said. “That’s when you just want to go in and quiet all of the critics, quiet their fans and just go and play ball and show people in the country what we’re capable of doing.” No. 22 WVU needs to quiet crowd against No. 15 LSU - College Football - Rivals.com
Great story Red and so true. Actually had a Georgia alum talk about this very game the other night. He said "we" broke off a long td run and he said "The damn stadium got louder. That's when I knew we were going to lose." LOL!!! ROLL TIDE!!!
I was about to say. I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed that. That '03 Georgia game was ridiculous. That was the most loud and disruptive game I've ever attended. D.J. Shockley was very rattled in that game. It was awesome!!!
Florida last year and Florida 07. Deafening man. Funny but in 07 i think it got the loudest when they announced USC had lost.
