Correct. You can not regulate greed. You can setup a program for absolute compliance, but that just means you look like you have institutional control once the allegations come to light.
The “Idea” that most high profile athletes from all high profile schools have been getting wads of cash for years echo’s of one of those ‘vast conspiracy theories’. All vast conspiracy theories have several things in common · One part fact – frequently out of context · Two parts urban legend · Three parts rumor – usually involved with alcohol · 4 parts imagination These days’ people are so desperate for their 15 minutes of fame that they get on TV, or internet, and tell extremely embarrassing details about their lives. And these days ‘reporters’ are so desperate to make it big that they take small non stories and blow them out of proportion. So to ask me to believe that the 10 to 20 thousand athletes that have come through the system in the last 25 years have all managed to keep this a secret from the hundreds of ‘reporters’ dying to make this the major story that it would be is just crazy.
Like tirk says, everybody cheats. But there's different levels of cheating. The $100.00 hand shakes or part time 'jobs' that the athlete never shows up to, but still gets paid are one thing. Everybody does it and it's impossible to stop. Paying 5-stars thousands of dollars to sign with your school is another. Does it still happen? Sure it does, but not on the scale of the other. That kind of thing is almost impossible to keep a secret for very long if it's the rule, rather than the exception. As someone else mentioned, there's way too much visibility on top tier programs for that to go on undetected for long periods of time.
