Got this email from my gump friend...don't know what it really means but is interesting in this slow period. Someone compared Bama's Defensive two deep roster with the Pittsburg steelers two deep...when they won the super bowl.

DE: Lorenzo Washington (6'5", 290 lbs.); Marcel Dareus (6'4", 296 lbs.)
NT: Terrence Cody (6'5", 354 lbs.); Josh Chapman (6'1", 313 lbs.)
DE: Brandon Deaderick (6'4", 306 lbs.); Luther Davis (6'3", 275 lbs. [was listed at 299 lbs. last year])
    JACK: Dont'a Hightower (6'4", 255 lbs.); Courtney Upshaw (6'2", 249 lbs.)
MIKE: Rolando McClain (6'4", 255 lbs.); Nico Johnson (6'3", 225 lbs.)
WILL: Jerrell Harris (6'3", 227 lbs.); Chris Jordan (6'3", 230 lbs.)
SAM: Cory Reamer (6'4", 234 lbs.); Tana Patrick (6'3", 235 lbs.)

Super Bowl-winning Pittsburgh Steelers' front seven (my projected two-deep):

DE: Aaron Smith (6'5", 298 lbs.); Travis Kirschke (6'3", 298 lbs.)
NT: Casey Hampton (6'1", 325 lbs.); Chris Hoke (6'2", 305 lbs.)
DE: Brett Keisel (6'5", 285 lbs.); Nick Eason (6'3", 305 lbs.)
LOLB: LaMarr Woodley (6'2", 265 lbs.); Arnold Harrison (6'3", 241 lbs.)
LILB: James Farrior (6'2", 243 lbs.); Keyaron Fox (6'3", 235 lbs.)
RILB: Lawrence Timmons (6'1", 234 lbs.); Donovan Woods (6'2", 230 lbs.)
ROLB: James Harrison (6'0", 242 lbs.); Andre Frazier (6'5", 245 lbs.)

im guessing that whoever sent you that email was trying to point out the similarities in their height and weight, which is irrelevant.

Yes, that's right. He is one of my regular customers who is a big Bama fan and owned several sporting goods stores around the state. In fact he used to sell a lot of equipment to the Bama football team...or it was routed by the manufacturers through his stores.

That morning we were talking about how when he played football, the players were much smaller; and now they seem to be HUGE. It's rare that on OL is less than 300 lbs these days.

His point was not that Bama's lines were as GOOD as the super bowl winning steelers, just that Bama's two deep lineup was as BIG as they were. Ours is probably about the same.

I told him that aside from bellies, the modern players are much more muscular too. I remember professional wrestlers who didn't have a six pack, but something that came from too many of them. Not these days. The wrestlers of today are really fit. (I guess they didn't use steroids back in the day.)

Anyway, he wasn't chiding me at all. And I didn't post it as some homer trash talk he sent me. I thought the size comparison alone was interesting.
College ball is really a long way from high school ball. My senior year (1972) we had guards and tackles that were 160 to 185 lbs. Unbelievable isn't it.
