Does anyone think this Penn St. Cover-Up was to let Joe Beat Bobby?

This just dawned on me. If Paterno and the staff there knew about this going on 3-5 years ago when he and Bobby Bowden were neck and neck for the record, did they cover it up to ensure Paterno would get the record - at any cost?????

    I'll hang up and listen...

No, I think the cover-up was due to the old garden variety "we don't want word to leak out that we employed a child molester" and "we think we can hush this up and no one will find out about it" with a side dish of rampant rationalization "for the good of the program".

It was covered up for the same reason most kids don't run to school and tell their friends how pops is beating up mom...avoid the embarrassment.

That doesn't make sense. It was covered up because Joe wanted to keep his coach and the school didn't want a black eye. Paterno did nothing wrong in 2002 or whenever it was. He wasn't going to lose his job if he'd just done the right thing.

First of all, anything's possible, but due to the fact that the investigation has been going on for 3 years on the matter, I highly doubt the DA wanted to wait for JoPA to get to 409! If that is the case, & nobody will ever know for sure, the DA is just as bad as the rest of them.

Why would he want to keep the coach after he knew what that sick bastarrd did?

The thing is, the grad assistant that witnessed with his own eyes what Sandusky was doing to that poor kid went with his father to JoPa's house to tell him what he saw. 1. Why the hell did that assistant not grab the nearest blunt object & bang that bastarrd over the freaking head to stop what he was doing to that innocent child! 2. Think about how difficult it must have been for the assistant to have to go to JoPa's house with his dad! JoPa then wen to the AD or UP, or whoever the higher up was! WHAT! Ok, maybe at first to find out how they want to go about it, make a plan to make sure Sandusky doesn't find out about what they're conspiring so he doesn't flee, or kill himself (b/c he deserve's to suffer in prison). If the upper's did want to do anything, I would assume JoPa would then go to the authorities himself! There's no way they could fire him after they arrested that guy! What the hell is going on? This entire story is unfathomable! I admired JoPa as a coach, & more as a man. But after this! NO WAY! They should all be fired, everyone to do with the athletic dept...take no chances!

AND THEN, the assistant that witnessed that atrocious crime with his own eyes is the WR's coach & recruiting coordinator! WHAT?! That wreaks! The guy obviously kept his mouth shut & in return gets a permanent job under the legendary coach! How the hell could you live with yourself for doing nothing! HOW! AND THEN Sandusky was still involved with children from his charity (so sick) up until the investigation 3 years ago! He was working out at the Penn St. facility last freaking week! How could that assistant (don't know his name, but he's the big red head guy on the sidelines) see that guy & pretend nothing happened! There is NO EXCUSE for any of these bastarrds! JoPa deserves to have his legacy ruined! He did it to himself by doing nothing about this situation. How many more kids lives were ruined since 02'? It could have all been avoided!

I'm not saying JoPa should face criminal charges b/c he supposedly immediately informed the upper's, but the fact that he just allowed them to do nothing about it is inexplicable!

They knew about it 12 years ago, not 3-5.

I really think Joe and the administration just wanted to save Penn State's squeeky clean reputation. Now, as in any cover-up, they have made things 10 times worse. Given the gravity of what Sandusky did, it's hard to imagine things worse....

These things almost always DO get WORSE! More incidents are uncovered, payments or extortions arise, witnesses come forth. Look at the Catholic Church's over $1 BILLION (as of 2002!) in hush money/settlements and then ask yourself just how truly corrupt people become when they harbor a malignancy within their organization and make a collective decision to cover up that malignancy.

What we are learning with every passing moment is the unbelievable amount of people that knew what was going on and just how long they kept silent. Many at PSU had knowledge in '98 and it's now the end of 2011. It's mind boggling how so many very powerful people didn't have the balls to step forward and protect a bunch of innocent kids from a child predator. In fact they let it continue and allowed him to remain a part of their inner circle. Paterno was about to retire as possibly the greatest coach ever. Now he will be forever remembered as the feeble old fool that protected a child rapist to protect his reputation and that of PSU. He will now never be remembered as a great coach. Turns out what so many thought was a saint was actually a POS. I knew there was a reason I never liked him.
