Yes, on www.dandydon.com, it says "Carl Otis Trimble (QB) 1974-76 Tallulah. Carl was the first black quarterback to ever play at LSU." See www.dandydon.com/where.html However, they don't provide anything to back up their claim. Regardless, it is most probably true that Carl Otis Trimble was the first Black person to letter as a QB for LSU -- according to LSUsports.net, Carl Otis Trimble lettered as both a QB and SB (split back). However, he was primarily a split back. According to LSUsports.net, Carl Otis Trimble lettered in '74, '75, and '76. Also, according to LSUsport.net, Billy Broussard was the leading LSU passer in '74, and Pat Lyons was the leading LSU passer in '75 and '76. As for Carl Otis Trimble, he was the leading receiver in '75 and '76. Also, Carl Trimble did have 8 rushing attempts for 133 yards against Colorado in 1974, but it doesn't say if he did that from the QB position or the split back position or what position. In other words, Carl Otis Trimble was used primarily as a starting receiver, not the starting QB (if he was even used as a QB at all, which I can't determine for sure). However, it is certain that the primary starting LSU QBs during that time were Billy Broussard and Pat Lyons. As for Donald "Lucky" Polk, LSUsports.net has him as one of our recruits in 1981, but LSUsports.net also shows that he never lettered at LSU. So it is impossible that he ever played QB for LSU. As a side note, the leading LSU passers during the 80's were Alan Risher ('80, '81, '82), Jeff Wickersham ('83, '84, '85), and Tommy Hodson ('86, '87, '88, and '89). Finally, here are links hosted by LSU.edu (the official website for LSU) that claim Herb Tyler was the first Black QB to ever start for LSU: "Lora O. Hinton, Jr. became the first African-American varsity football letterman in 1973-74; and in 1998-99, Herb Tyler was LSU's first African- American football quarterback." http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/exhibits/redstick/cas8txt.html "First Black LSU football quarterback (Herb Tyler)" http://appl027.lsu.edu/acadaff/edcoweb.nsf/$Content/Did+You+Know?OpenDocument
Right, but you can't expect that of anybody in this world (not even me--trust me, I'm very certain that I myself am guilty of posting crap on here just like everyone else here and everywhere does--nobody is 100% intellectually diligent all the time). In fact, that link I provided from LSU.edu was part of a project called "From Redstick to River Capital -- Three Centuries of Baton Rouge History," which claims to be "an online exhibition brought to you by LSU Libraries Special Collections," (main page here -- http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/exhibits/redstick/). They wrote, like I quoted above, that "in 1998-99, Herb Tyler was LSU's first African-American football quarterback." http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/exhibits/redstick/cas8txt.html Go to the introduction section of that work (http://www.lib.lsu.edu/special/exhibits/redstick/brex2.html#top) and you will see that it "was curated by V. Faye Phillips, Associate Dean for Special Collections, LSU Libraries" and that "Several staff of [LSU's] Hill Memorial Library assisted in the selection and evaluation of materials for the exhibition, including: Elaine Smyth, Curator of Rare Books and the E. A. McIlhenny Natural History Collection; Jo Jackson, University Archivist; Frances Huber, Exhibitions Coordinator, LSU Special Collections; Charles Thomas, Interim Curator of the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections; Emily Robison, Political Papers Curator; Renate Zietz, Unit Head, Image Resources; and Merle Suhayda, Electronic Imaging Laboratory Manager. The physical exhibition was coordinated and arranged by Frances Huber, Exhibitions Coordinator, LSU Special Collections." Yet, that doesn't change the fact that (as many of us all know) Herb Tyler took over as LSU's starting QB late in 1995 for an injured Jamie Howard and was the starter from 1996 to 1998, not 1998-99 as that online representation of that work by LSU Libraries claimed (sure it might have just been a typo by a clerk, but it is still wrong). Point is, I wouldn't be too shocked if Carl Otis Trimble was the first Black person to take a few snaps as an LSU QB (he did letter as a QB and a SB), but I still believe that Herb Tyler was LSU's first true starting Black QB.
FWIW John, the above inaccuracies should be enough to convince you to at least look elsewhere for info. If LSU's media guide lists Trimble as having lettered at QB, I'll beleive it before a publication stating that Herb started sometime after Leaving LSU. I wasn't even born yet when Trimble played, so I'm not going to pretend to remember. But me and Herb worked at the same car dealership during '98/'99, so I know he wasn't playing at LSU.
