Not quite. Y.A Tittle and Bert Jones were the best quarterbacks of their time.

Who is to say that he is not satisfied with the shot he had a QB this season and the future chance at QB? I remember that RP didn't throw the ball all that much when he first played. This looks just like that situation. I am SURE that the coaches pointed to the use of RP and told Shep that this is how he would be used his first year. Brought along slowly. Shep has even said so in interviews that he was happy that the staff was bringing him along slowly. He actually took a snap from under center instead of the shot gun in the Arky game!

Plus who knows if Shep still wants to play QB? He had to have been shell shocked in the Spring practice at how extraordinarily complicated playing QB at this level is and how talented (height and arm strength wise) his competition is at that position. By now, he may have figured that he has a better chance of helping the team and getting a shot at pro ball at WR/RB/PR/KR. I knew when I was a senior in high school, I was going to be a lawyer. I changed my major to engineering my first summer at LSU and now I am a code monkey...

i'll give you bert jones... maybe. tittle is too far removed to be relevant to the discussion... completely different era. what i mean is a QB who is THE best athlete on the field, who can run, who can throw, who can basically do anything. perrilloux was almost that player... it's hard to get all of that from one player, so i think that a dual-system would work well with shepard being implemented in a true wildcat. just think about next season, regardless of what the OC works out for JJ, RS ought to be a nice addition -- provided he knows the playbook and formations.

** i'm not knocking y.a. tittle, or bert jones, or any other LSU QB, past or present... **

good points! see, i thought that this was a more relevant topic than simply bashing JJ and questioning whether he can lead us to a championship.

Well, with Crowton there you might as well throw this fantasy right out the window.

As far as JJ's ability or lack of... good enough to get you 7-10 wins a year if you keep the talent around him in the top 3 like LSU has currently. You put him on Miss. State and it would be a epic disaster.

    Good:
    - Doesn't turnover the ball (but that is because he doesn't throw the ball and takes sacks)
    - Seems like he is trying hard
    - Seems like he is working hard
    - Has arm strength when there is nobody within 5 yards of him and he has time to windup his throw.

    Bad:
    - Huge mechanics to throw motion... this one is a killer
    - Drops way too deep
    - Doesn't move up in the pocket
    - No pocket presents
    - Panics when a defender is with 5 yards of him
    - No arm strength when defenders don't give him room
    - Does not read the defense
    - Does not go through progressions, first receiver is not open... panic time
    - Not really that athletic at all, I can't say he is Dan Fouts but he sure isn't what I would call athletic. I would say he has average feet for a QB but with his indecision it ends up looking poor, he has no quickness, which means it takes him a while to get up to speed.
    - Has no clue how to run the option, even though they run simple option plays
    - Holds onto the ball

    Not his fault:
    - Crowton as his OC and QB coach

I told you guys before the beginning of the season that if they didn't use the first 4 games to try and build something other then Scott up the middle it would get ugly.

I have no problem with the kid, he plays hard and that is all I expect from him but at the end of the day he is what I described above. It's people trying to make him something he is clearly not that is the problem. A new OC and QB coach can improve things but he still has limited ability. IMHO.

One year ago all the talk was about how Jefferson DID have "it" after the win over Ga Tech.

All those things you mentioned are fixable, and I absolutely believe Jefferson has the "it" to lead us to an SEC/National Championship.

    In a word, "no."

Reasons primarily mental/emotional, not so much physical. After a year of learning, face it, by this time, he is no longer the fresh young kid. Yet he still appears to panic, not make his reads, and makes poor decisions. He just does not appear to "get it."

You don't get to championships with that kind of decision making from a QB. We will have a winning record with him, but just don't see how we can be dominant.
