I agree that much would change with better line play on both sides of the ball.

Few freshman or sophomore quarterbacks are polished and capable of championship caliber play. It happens but it is rare.

Jefferson the sophomore is an athlete with physical talent but doesn't seem to have the mental acuity required. However, Jefferson the junior may be much improved in this aspect. We shall see.

If he changed his name to Matt, I would all but guarantee it.

in spite of starting a separate thread, how do you think shepard feels about that? he was (as was reported) "promised" a shot a playing QB, which is why he came to LSU (again going by reports.) i can't drag up any articles, but there were many. do you think that he has had his "shot" at QB? that faux-wildcat direct snap play? do you think that that play satisfied his want of playing the QB position?

we all said that he would be best utilized as a RB/WR, which is how he was recruited by other schools. LSU was the only one (or one of the only ones) that offered him a shot at QB.

No I do not believe so and for many of the reasons listed by the original poster.

he very well may still get a shot at playing QB, but he's not going to supplant someone with more experience than him.
did we promise he would be playing QB as a true freshman? if that's the case then that was pretty stupid on both parts ours for offering and his for believing.

from all reports he has trouble grasping where to line up in his different positions, i don't think he's ready to grasp QB just yet.
maybe for a few plays here and there but it'd probably be wildcat related. but that's nothing to sneeze at (10 blocking 11 with shep is a huge advantage one crowton doesn't use enough).

but those that want to see him take regular snaps at QB dropping back (as a true freshman) i think is asking too much. he has gotten on the field (albeit not enough) but people should be rallying for shep after JJ graduates, not now. if shep was an all world mack daddy QB, he would be playing.
jesus tebow christ yielded PT to chris freaking leak for pete's sake. and i don't think shep is as good of a passer as tebow is and that's saying alot b/c i don't think timmah is the best passer in the world. (he's a great jump passer though :yelwink2:)

Yes I do. Wonder how many teams with basically a RS Freshman starting QB are playing in a major bowl. Probably only one. I thought Colt McCoy was a dud when he was a RS freshman and Mack Brown made a mistake when he started him over Jevan Snead. OOPS!

JJ's problems are mostly cranial. He needs some coaching skull sessions more than anything. Game awareness and field generalship are his weaknesses.

i'm not sure how the conversations bw him and CLM went, but i can remember reading that he'd get his shot at QB. i just don't think he'll be an every down QB -- ever. but garrett and shepard would be a helluva dual (triple) threat after JJ's finished! and for the record, i think that JJ is good enough for LSU to compete for, and win, championships. LSU's never really had an awesome all-world QB -- ever. perilloux was close, but that didn't pan out. most LSU QBs in the past have had things that they were certainly great at, and the OCs used it to their potential... and i know i don't have to say anything about how ineffective their job has been this season.
