i would be curious to their average against SEC comp and then averages under coach stud vs searles.

i'm not resourceful enough and too lazy to find that out but i know the line isn't what it used to be.

ok, so did a little research:

LSU vs. OOC teams which would have been 4 teams, Washington, ULL, La Tech, and Tulane, LSU is averaging 6.1 yards per carry. 110 rushes for 671 yards.

LSU vs. SEC 178 rushes for 860 yards average of 4.83 yards per carry.

Over a yard difference, from SEC to OOC. Looking at the numbers, some of the games that brought that average down. Mississippi State, yeah Mississippi State, 20 carries for 66 yards. UF 18 carries for 70 yards. Ole Miss 18 carries for 85 yards. Alabama 19 carries for 100 yards. So basically, when LSU rushed for 100 yards or less, we either lost, or it took a goal line stand to win.

You are right though, we need to get a hell of alot better in conference. What gets me is the game when we rushed the ball the most was the Tulane game, coincidentally that is the only game that ended in a blow out other than ULL.

I think the moral is, in order to win games in the SEC you must be able to run the ball and run it effectively and not give up on the run late in games, which is what we did this year. Crowton fell in love with the pass in close games.

You were pretty spot on though 327.

The strongest compliment you can say about JJ is that he was starting QB during 8 victories while playing an SEC schedule this year. Clearly, he has a lot of talent around to help. But you have to give him credit for winning.

However, there is no way I can say that I believe he will lead us to a BCS NC. The OP brings up a lot of legitamate issues that prevent him from being top 10 QB. Maybe they are correctable but the volume of issues to work on makes me skeptical. Plus, I would have liked to see him make a little more progress this year. Taking the sack in the final Ole Miss drive was a killer. Running out of bounds before the half of the Ark game was stupid. These weren't mistakes that just hurt you in college football. They are mistakes in junior high and high school football too.

Of course, you don't necessarily have to have a top ten QB to win a NC (Flynn, Mauck, the Bama kid). But you do need a high 'football IQ' to manage the game and get the most out of your teamates.

my minimal contribution to statistical analysis is that yds/rush after subtracting out the QB (still not exactly right because of numerous called QB runs) shows a marked and steady decrease. 4.56 in 09, 5.0 in 08, and 5.44 in 07.

I believe he can. He's shown improvement as the regluar season came to a close. It's also worth noting that Mauck and Flynn were not the greatest passers or the best running QB's to ever play for LSU; they were good leaders. I think that as the OL improves and the RB's become consistant, JJ will do better.

Besides, as of now, he's the best we've got. After this season, the other QB's are going to have to really show him up in the off season and practice to become the starter.

what i wonder, is when Crowton started here in 07, he kept the playbook from the previous coaches and added some wrinkles, the plan from what i understand was to have a slow transition to Crowton's playbook and schemes, well i think you are seeing the results. We will come out first half, and have a good mix of run and pass, if LSU gets a big lead, we will go conservative and run the ball in the 2nd half, and try and run the clock out which is evident by the 2 games with the most rushing attempts Tulane and ULL (vandy acutally has the 2nd most but it was biblically raining) But if the game is close and we are ahead by a small amount, or tied, or trailing by a small amount, the run gets abandoned. 18 attempts vs. UF, 20 attempts vs. MS ST, 19 attempts vs. Bama, 18 attempts vs. Ole Miss. Coincidentally 3 of those games were losses, and 1 we won on a goal line stand.

those numbers were rushing attempts by running backs, i didn't count any runs by Jordan Jefferson because of the number of sacks he took.

but those include the 3 toughest DLs LSU faced.

i guess id lean towards agreeing with your point. crowton probably prefers to pass than run. just cant do that with any old qb.

under saban and miles especially miles thru 07, LSU did three things very well:
    1) ran the ball
    2) won third down on offense and defense a majority of the time
    3) had good play in the trenches on both sides

say what you want about JJ, just like people did about every other QB the tigers have had not named hodson or jones the QB is always heavily criticized.

if that's what worries you, then fine.

what worries me are the 3 factors above.
