The reason we are suffering in the run game is because they are loading the box, and cheating the safeties up. We have to be able to throw the ball downfield, because the secondaries we play are giving our receivers 0 respect.
Very good point. While the OL has been very poor they arent getting any help by our lack of deep or even intermediate passing. Which is why Ive been saying we have to go down the field even if its for not just to get the D to play more honest. JJ is certainly a work in progress but he showed against Miss St what LSU could do when given the opportunity. Both the play calling and the OL have to step up for the up the middle and between the tackles running to improve.
That goal line stand was phenomenal, but came as a result of a big play where Taylor mistimed his jump. Taylor is going to special but this was probably his worst game this year. I'm pleased with the secondary for the most part. Our DLine...not so much. No consistent pass rush, and when they get there, poor tackling. I think the biggest problem on the DLine is noone demands a double team. Big Glenn Dorsey demanded a double team. Tyson Jackson demanded a double team. Noone on this line gives opposing offensive coaches headaches schematically. I thought it would've been Nevis, and he's made some good plays and has been close many more times, but it just hasn't happened yet. Maybe that's why we were seeing so much Josh Downs. Rahim Alem needs to be rotated more often. He's not an every down End. Woods is a big kid from a small school who tore it up in high school but hasn't shown that ability at this level. I hope Davenport doesn't suffer a similar fate because their high school careers are similar numbers wise. Alexander never has been and doesn't look like he ever will be. When people railed against the secondary last year, I felt the DLine was the majority of their problem. The secondary is much improved, but could be great if we had a pass rush.
Well said, you win and lose in the trenches. LSU is the perfect example. Look at our title runs. I think the DL played well most of the game, but in the second half they werent getting as much of a push and were blown up off the line for a lot of gashes up the middle. To be honest though we seen a lot of the poor tackling again as well which helped those plays become bigger. You are bound to get beat deep or have tackles broken. What kills LSU is the fact that the play is cyclical. When going good, we playing at a high level. Conversely, when the DL is playing well, the tackling seems to be poor, coupling the effects. So yeah, it starts up front. Look at Bama, they arent overall as talented as LSU but they have a very good OL and DL. Hence they are a much better team at this point.
I guess so. Our D looks decent (strech) in the redzone. I have to say that our I formation running up the middle sure did set up that TD bomb to LaFell to start the 2nd half. Not that I'm a big fan of Holliday, but what happened to him? He never came into the game as a RB and I think his perimeter speed could have broken a couple of big ones. If Scott and Williams couldn't get it done, why didn't they try TH? That Alem pass interference saving a touchdown, why the HELL was he covering a reciever and he didn't get any help? I still saw a couple of players in the seconday miss the recievers on their big plays. I also don't feel good with teams running up the middle and consistantly missing tackles and letting teams run for 6 yards a pop. And Sheppard needs more touches on offense wherever position he plays (and throw a pass please, that would open up bigger runs out of the wildtiger). A for sure, the O-line needs to have a fire lit under their asses. I say this all in the context of LSU is the only team I scrutinize, so I think all teams have problems. We did win, saw some deep passes, we saw C Jones and the D step up big when they needed to. It was ugly, doesn't make me feel confident with our upcoming schedule, but it was a very exciting game and I'll always root for the Tigers no matter how their doing, whose coaching, whose playing, and where ever they are ranked.
I guess one big positive that we can take from our first month of the season is that this team has shown that they can handle road games. Washington was much, much louder than any of us expected. Coupled with all of the travel issues, I think they showed a lot of poise in that win. And as much as I hate those stupid cowbells (really, true fans don't need props you losers), they are very loud and insanely annoying. So I guess we have that going for us. At least I hope we do, because we're going to need it in Athens this weekend.
Because it's there. We can't be one-dimensional or predictable. Running them isn't the problem. Lack of execution is the problem.
last years 4-0 wasnt as good as you remember or as it seemed at the time. killed a FCS team killed NTx beat #10 Auburn that was more like #50 beat MissSt by 10 in BR (thats a lot like beating them by 4 on the road especially when you factor in the safety.) i think lsu's 4-0 this season is more impressive. if that helps at all.
I'm not telling you what to do. I'm telling you what I do. All you experts can hash it out until the cows come home.
