I haven't heard a lot of negative press on Miles. Certainly not a deep skepticism about his ability to win championships.

Good post. I absolutely agree that the turnover margin is LSU's biggest problem, and has been for a couple of years. Miles needs to find some way to solve the problem. Under Saban, if someone fumbled a ball, he had to carry it around with him the rest of the week. Sounds silly, but it seemed to work. Maybe Miles should try it. He's got to do something to solve the problem.

well, i'm just sayin that we tend to beat each other up but i get where you're coming from, my main point is that things need to fall into place when getting to a championship. and sometimes (especially for an SEC team that's not Fla vs Neb in 95) getting there is harder than actually winning the NC game. which is why SEC teams have seemed to make the most of their shot when they get to the title game.

not to go back to the conference thing but the two biggest turnover differentials on your stats was miami in '01 and USC in '04. big east and pac 10. what i take from that is where there is a bigger gap in TO differential there's probably a lot less parity.

i agree with you that when miles does get there it will be b/c his team creates breaks, but i still feel that college football is not a league where you can say "just win, and everything will take care of itself" which is why i support a playoff.

when going to a NC has everything to do with polls (popularity) and what other teams in front of your team do, i still feel that it hurts the SEC.

look, even my opinion is detrimental to LSU b/c what if the pollsters share my opinion?? (and most do)
in the preseason, they'll look at a team like LSU last year (with Tenn, AU, and UF on road) and think "wow, that team is going to lose one if not two of those games. that's tough, even though they have as much talent as a USC or Ohio St. let's put 'em at #5 or #6 instead of 1-3." meaning that if all those other teams go undefeated, LSU will have to as well and still will have some leapfrogging to do.

i know it seems to most LSU fans that the national media is more aware of us than ever but the rude awakening for me came with JR's rise to the #1 pick. this guy wasn't on anyone's radar till the last game of his career and it took a BCS game against the hallowed ND fighting irish for people to locate JR's bandwagon, not the dozens of freakish highlights or the 9 comeback wins that preceded it????

people (the press) didn't give LSU or Fla much chance in the NC in '03 and '06 respectively. b/c in '03 there were other teams in the SEC that were good that made us look vunerable (i.e. UF, :eek:lefire: , UGA I, etc.) same with Fla. last year (AU, carolina, etc.) lots of good teams in conference where we beat each other up.
yet last year ohio st steamrolls people on a down year in the big 10, oklahoma gets called "the greatest team ever" by many 10 games into '03 and no one thinks an SEC team can compete b/c "they didn't look too good against _______(pick a team).

SEC teams have to fight against national perception. a close game against a conference foe on the road is seen as a weakness in the SEC even when getting the W. especially when a team like USC can go to tempe, berkely or pullman and hang 40 on them.

so see hawker, all we really need is a playoff and all my ranting would cease:hihi: .

i don't think our team was anymore dilligent about taking care of the ball under saban than under miles. it seemed to be a recurring theme even under dinardo and through today that we don't cause as many turnovers as we should and we don't recover fumbles whether they be offensive or defensive.

In '05, we couldn't seem to get any turnovers. The other team would fumble, but we just rarely ever came up with the ball. Last year, we were decent. Our defense did a pretty good job of coming up with turnovers (like Pelini stresses), but our offense turned the ball over too many times.

Hopefully we can get that under control next year, but some people have said that Crowton's offense worries about scoring points & doesn't mind turning the ball over on occasion to do it. That is a pretty big philosophy change from Jimbo, who focused on not turning the ball over & taking occasional shots. We'll have to wait & see if that's the case.

good thoughts.... although I think the SEC gets plenty of play from the sports world. I have yet to talk to any fan of any conference who thinks the media treats them fairly.

As I like to say, "Any college football story that doesn't mention the Iowa Hawkeyes is poorly written.":yelwink2:

apparently, i must spread reputation around before giving it to hawker again.

i know we get play, but i think it's on reputation now. john q. talking head says the SEC is tough b/c two other heads said it. but i doubt their true knowledge of the SEC b/c they probably don't watch our games.

Fact: Les Miles is 40 points away from not 1 but 2 perfect seasons. The more I think about that, the more I know the LSU Program is in great hands. 40 points. Saban lost 31-0 to a Dennis Frachione coached Bama team in his 3rd year, just to put those 40 points into perspective.
