I understand that it functioned and displayed the time as a clock, therefore it's a clock. The case isn't what makes it into a clock, performing the function does. I don't think anyone claimed he improved it. He wanted to take it apart and put it together inside another case. Curious minds often don't have a point other than exposure to the experience of taking something apart and putting it together again. I took everything I could get my hands on apart when I was a kid.
