Do we have a QB that can run the option next year?

Sure seems like it has been a weapon in our arsenal for the last decade.

Funny you make that comment since LSU football has never consistently thrived at the level it has in the last decade.

Exactly! I believe it is one of the reason we have been so good the last decade. Much harder for opposing defenses to plan for a two QB system or a dual threat QB.

Yes, his name is Jerrard Randall and he will play next year to help Mett out.

And by and large, I disagree. I've pointed this out in other threads.

    Hodson
    Rohan
    JaMarcus
    Mauck
    Flynn
    RP

All pro-style pocket passers. All won SEC titles (Mauck and Flynn were fast enough to ellude the rush and get positive yards, i.e. a John Elway/Steve Young, but weren't pure "dual threat"). RP was the ONLY "running QB" in the bunch and even HE looked to pass first.

    Herb Tyler
    Marcus Randall
    JJ

All "running QB's". ZERO conference championships among them. Fun to watch? Yeah. Can make something happen with their feet when pockets collapse? Likely. But that's where it ends.

I just don't understand the continued infatuation with "running QB's"?? Exactly WHAT in our history has suggested we NEED a dual-threat guy in order to succeed? If we have one, fine. But he needs to be a passer first.

I agree with this. We don't NEED the option. When you have a QB that is as good a runner as JJ is then I honestly think his passing game suffers, almost as if he is looking for a running lane instead of reading his progression. JJ looks terrible in the pocket, PERIOD. He certainly brings another set of athletic legs to our offense, but we are stacked with running backs and WRs who can handle that aspect of the game. We NEED a leader and passer at QB.......Lee is that guy. I'm not saying abandon JJ althogether, but the overwhelming majority of the snaps should go to Lee, no question.

    I hope not.
I would be content to never see the Option again at LSU.

I wouldnt mind seeing some Wildcat from time to time though

Man, everything that I've heard about Randall is very exciting. He was the scout team QB that helped us prepare for Oregon so well. I've also heard that he has the best arm on the team, although that is a hard sell with Rivers and Mett on the roster.

If you have a QB on your team that can give other defenses something else to think about & prepare for, that is a huge advantage to have. We are doing exactly that right now with JJ, and I think it will pay huge dividends for the rest of the season.

Mauck ran the ball quite a bit. Most of his running yards were designed plays. Flynn had RP to come in and be a dual threat QB. JaMarcus sure could have used the help, some of the greatest talent in LSU history never got to the promised land with JaMarcus. Hodson played in a different era. Herb Tyler definitely improved a Tiger program that had been dismal in the 90's to a winning program. If JJ did not get arrested he would have been the most successful QB in LSU history.

Sorry Charlie! LSU is much better with running QB's!
