The truth shall set you free I recommend anybody who gets a rise out of this topic, to find a way to listen to the actual interview. As Rwilliams said, it is completely different from the way it has been perceived! BUT - Only 1 thing matters to me. Saturday! - Beating the Gators, and getting another W over another ranked team!!! Lee is our starter! He will start saturday and next saturday, and so on.
Just for perspecive . . I work in Houston. Topic number one at my office isn't even the always big UT/OK Game. It's what the hell is with TAMU and blowing big leads - and how will TAMU handle the SEC. And all the conversation is negative bordering on panic. I'll take an invented QB controversy anyday. Friends, relax, be happy, enjoy this moment of LSU football history.
Just for the sake of argument ... 1) JJ has always excelled in practice, but it has never consistently translated to performance on the field. 2) JJ became the starter based on Lee's pick 6 happy 2008 year and an injury. Of course, a freshman "running QB" who can't pass is going to appear better than a freshman QB who can pass but does not have the experience to read SEC defenses. It's pretty easy .. just run run run and let the Defense and FG unit win the game for you. 3) JJ remained the starter because of CLM's dogged determination that he would be the starter. JL should have been moved up last year, but you know as well as anyone, CLM continued to give JJ every benefit of the doubt. IMO, that hurt Lee's performance. .. it's just my opinion, and as they say .. opinions are like arse holes .. everyone has one. 4) I watched every stinking game last year, and I'll watch every stinking game this year. I am as much a fan as anyone, and even JJ does get stuck back in there, I'll root for him to do well, just like I do Lee. 5) You are absolutely right!!! .. I'm not one of the Coaches. But last I noticed, this is not the coaches board room. This is an opinion page. Just because in my opinion, Lee is every bit the QB that JJ is, and deserves the same dogged stubborness that CLM showed JJ last year with regards to remaining the starter, doesn't mean squat, and I know that as well as anyone, doesn't mean I don't have the right to voice my opinion. Sure, I have my bias .. I like pro-style QBs. I like to see RBs run and WR's catch the ball. I'm no fan of the running QB. Hey, some like vanilla .. some like chocolate. But to the point of the therad, JJ has every right to want to start. Every player on the team wants to start. And as you said, the coaches will make that decision.
My point to you is simple. JJ was the starter in ’09 & 10’ because he BEAT Lee out for the position. Why? I am not the coach and can’t answer that. We are all entitled to our opinions, and yes this is a forum to share them. Yes Jarrett Lee has played MUCH improved, BUT if the coaches felt that before week one JJ was the better QB, then obviously he must have improved too if he was playing BETTER than Lee enough to win the starting position. One would think You said and I quote “If he were good enough to top JL’s performance, he would have done it by now” My thoughts back to you, are obviously he did so on the practice field because he was after all named the starter before the bar fight. Last time I checked, heading into fall camp there was no declared starter and obviously JJ won the job. Now, did JJ win the job over “old Lee” or did JJ win the job over “new Lee” – BECAUSE JJ had made the same improvements under Krags and the new system - None of us really know My entire point behind any of this, is that IF Krags was able to improve Lee (Which SOMEONE has) then how would you any of us know, he was not able to do the same with JJ? We don’t, because we haven’t seen it yet. IF he HAS, then HELL YES I want JJ starting ONLY because JJ would be the BETTER QB, and give the TEAM a better chance to win.
Lee has a QB rating of 140.5 which puts him 51st nationally - slightly ahead of guys like Ryan Tannehill and A.J. McCarron. And that was accomplished against some pretty stiff competition. LSU is currently ranked 101st in passing offense based on passing yards per game. However, in passing efficiency LSU is ranked 43rd. Total offense, LSU is ranked 90th, but 19th in scoring offense, 8th in redzone offense.
Perhaps, it's because given a consistent (more than 1 snap or series a game) chance to prove it on the field JL proved he's a better game manager the JJ? Shouldn't performance during a game hold more weight than performance on the practice field? (Yes I'm pro-JL but I'm not *anti* anybody being put in when the situation calls for it)
I dont want to argue with this because I dont want to point out negatives and dont mind Lee being our starter. All, I'll say, is I wish our passing game was better, and I am not saying that it would be with JJ back there. Not our PASSING GAME
