It is the right thing for many players. Many kids come in with delusions of impending stardom. Some kids may actually be able to contribute. Give them a taste of what is to come, and then send them on their way to get fully prepared for the rest of the year. The memories of the time on field during the early season tuneups provides wonderful motivation for the redshirts.
That won't work in this case because I'm pretty sure Jai never saw the field this season. I could be wrong but I didn't see him in any of the participation rosters.
