there is a very small element of the democratic party that would indeed like it if all guns were confiscated. that said, the vast majority of democrats and republicans support the second amendment. i have friends who are extremely liberal democrats who openly admit they would never relinquish their weopons. I would say the faction of the democratic party who want to do away with the 2nd amendment is about the same size as the faction of the republicans party who would like to make christianity the official state religion of the country. both are ludicrous notions and have no place in our national conversation. the one exception I would make as it pertains to gun control is this: we do need to have a national conversation about where we draw the line on weopons for private citizens. While I have no issue with automatic weopons, I would never want a private citizen to own a hand grenade or a shoulder fired rocket launcher.
How about a potato gun loaded with black powder? I can do that. IMO. Gun ownership, and use, is the responsibility of the handler. You pull the trigger, you accept the consequences, good or bad. Responsible gun owners can do more to deter crime than law officers and if the politician is not an avid shooter, hunter, or ex-military, they need to stay out of the debate. Hunter safety course would be a good idea for first time gun owners.
