Not sure everyone knows exactly how well LSU's defense played Saturday night. LSU almost totally dominated Georgia. And, believe it or not, this is being brought to light by Glen Gilbeau. I wasn't aware of how much success Chavis has had in the past against Georgia. A VERY good article: Glenn Guilbeau: Hats off to LSU for thrilling win | shreveporttimes.com | The Times
i wouldn't say they dominated, Cox could sit in the pocket and roast marshmellows if he felt like it. We still blew some assignments in the secondary, but the defense did step up and show that they are for real. The DLine even though they got no pressure, they stuffed the run, and they didn't break contain. The Linebackers and Secondary tackled like champs, and for a moment there, it felt like old times. LSU's defense is back.
We need to find inventive ways of getting to the QB. I think it's a foregone conclusion the line as it stands now can't get a QB sack. It's all about timing and clearing a lane/gap to shoot through for a linebacker or safety or possibly even a CB blitz off the edge. We need to do that this weekend.
Maybe... but LSU allowed UGA to only one 1st down in 2.5 quarters of play... that's pretty close to total domination... only reason this game didn't seem like it was we couldn't score points.
I totally agree. I think we should try the CB blitz. I understand not doing it against Georgia because you have possibly the best receiver in the nation to account on the other side. But I would love to see Peterson shoot through there on certain downs against these other teams that don't have such a fantastic receiver. I guarantee you Peterson would get to that QB in the game (we could try others corners as well). It's one of the hardest things for a QB because he doesn't really know it's coming if it's disguised right.. We definitely need something creative to get in there. Georgia's center snapped the ball short on that last drive and it layed on the ground for about an hour. Still, our D-lineman didn't even get close to it. That was very noticeable.
That isnt a bad idea, Jai has trouble covering why not let him blitz. It is going to be KEY, that we blitz and not just sit back, but we MUST disguise the blitz extremely well. If we cannot disguise it, i would rather not do it.
I agree with you. The DLine is going to have to kick it into a higher gear and punish the Florida QB this coming weekend. The DBacks will do their job.
Just remember that if you blitz a CB, a linebacker has to drop back into coverage on the open receiver. At this point Chavis may feel that his LBs need more work in pass defense before bringing a lot of blitzes from the secondary. Also, if it isn't disguised right, it's a very easy play for the QB to make. The guys are still learning the system, these things will come with time. LSU brought a 3-man rush while everyone else dropped into a deep cover 2. I wouldn't have expected those guys to make a play on the ball in that situation anyway.
Definitely going to have to find a way to get pressure against quality QB's. Right now it's the only area where the D is struggling. If we had a front 4 that could get at least a little pressure this D would be hard to beat. Once Chavis gets his guys it could be scary. I hope he is really recruiting like mad.
