On Defense should LSU put 8 in the box and pressure Boeckman or whatever his name is. SHould the zone blitz to stop the running, the off centers, traps, and counter plays of Ohio St. Or just bring the house and let the secondary go man to man most of the game. Maybe put Beckwith on the tight end, spy him most of the game? On Offense, I think we set up the run first, Hester up the middle in the shotgun formation or I-formation. THen try to get Williams, Murphy and the little guy to the corners. Pound Scott on a few counters and trap running plays or do we just open of the skies like the gulf war and let Flynn and receivers go for broke. any thoughts on these subjects? screw all the rumors and crap, lets talk some real football today.
Ohio St. Game Plan: See Virginia Tech Game Plan Get back to blitzing.. a lot... when LSU blitzes, they shut people down... why they sit back and play Pelini-Ball, they lose... On offense, go back to the two QB system... Shake things up a bit... Pound Hester from the "I", but for God's sake, RUN SOME PLAYACTION OFF OF IT! I don't know how many times this year when LSU lines up and its 4th and 1, everyone knows whats coming... fake the handoff to Hester and hit your tightend across the middle or the fullback in the flat... Get Perrilloux and Holliday on the field at the same time... runs some Pistol with them... run some zone read... run some "student body right" and him Perrilloux a downfield pass option... Its time for the coaches to show some balls and stop being some predictable.. yes.. they do good stuff like fake kicks and going for it on 4th, but they also do too much of the same stuff over and over...
I tend to agree about playing Perrilloux more just to complicate their preparations and expectations. And I agree that we should be running play-action passes and fake draws out of the I, but it should not be forgotten that those "predictable" I-back off tackle runs are almost automatic yardage for us even if they know its coming and is our bread-and-butter running play. It's made Hester our first 1,000-yard rusher in years and we should pound Ohio State with it. They are better at pass defense than rushing defense.
Just a guess, but the offense should run the Jimbo Fisher/running Matt Mauck veer with both QBs and incorporate more elements of the spread to the routine offense. Hey, they are the Big Ten. I would look at the Washington game and the Illinios game to see what work. Washington did score 14 with a very green QB, Locker, if I am not mistaken. There defense never gave up more than 17 all year, very impressive. Lastly, if there is one fasle start/illegal proceedure penalty in the Dome, that will be disappointing. Of course, I'll take 200yds of penalities if we win, but I can't see the backwards yards helping the cause. Defensively, the plan should be to get to the QB, but prevent the big play and win the turnover battle. I feel confident that a healthy and academically qualified defensive line could bring abundant pressure to the QB. Chris Beenie Wells is not D-Mac, but has run very well this season and I would love to hold him to minimal yards, well under 100, and make Ohio throw it around.
To tell you the truth the only thing im worried about is which LSU team will show up the one that destroyed VA TECH or the one that lest BAMA and Tulane Hang around. Ohio St does not match up very well at any position against us, we should be able to do whateva we pretty much want i just hope we play perriloux more the game they had against illinois showed that they didnt have an answer for a moblie quarterback. if we can ever get back to our blitzing style of defense i think we should'nt have much of a problem stopping them because we have played against the best running game in the country in arkansas and against some of the best passing attacks out there. ohio st plays a traditional offense so no smoke and mirrors like a spread attack.. there pretty much gonna line up an pklay smash mouth football....
Just a reminder...we scored the fewest points all year in the SECCG with Perriloux at the helm. Granted, he did an adequate job and won the MVP. But he only posted 14 on the board. The defense did the rest. This is Flynn's team and he's put up no less than 28 in any game this year. I hope we stay away from the quarterback swapping. We may need the timeouts. And don't confuse the strength and power of Perriloux with mobility. Flynn is plenty mobile, but not nearly as strong as Perriloux.
On offense we have been very predictable depending on what players are in the game. For instance, when Perriloux comes in we run him wide usually on an option. Keiland runs wide off of a pitch while the fullback dives into the opposite side of the line. Scott catches a middle screen. The tough yardage or 4th down ydg is Hester over left guard, where big Herman resides. We need to get away from this predictability. Notice in the last game how Hester made good yardage from the fullback spot because the defense was flowing with Holiday-who was basically subbing for an injured Keiland- and expecting the ball to be pitched to Holiday around the opposite side. In the Arkansas game we lined Hester up at fullback in the I formation and threw a TD to him that was called back and may well have won the game for us. It happened because 90% of the time we run out of the I formation. Conversely, did you see how Tennessee completely shut down the QB draw after they had seen it work in the Arky game. We have an empty backfield when we run it and that tipped them off that it was coming. If we bring Perriloux in we better have a misdirection play off of his usual running or let him pull a "Tebow" and fake like he is going to run and actually throw.
It's interesting to read these assessments. I don't agree that Ohio State doesn't match-up well at all positions. Ohio State has very good CBs and should hold their own against your talented receivers. The key for LSU will be to get those receivers matched up on safeties and linebackers. Ohio State's safeties are good against the run, but are not that great in coverage. I don't think LSU will be able to make a living running the ball to the outside. The Buckeye linebackers pursue too well from sideline to sideline. Teams have been successful from time to time running up the middle, so I think Hester is going to be huge for you guys. If the Buckeyes can limit him, they'll probably have a good chance to win. Ohio State has been hurt by the no-huddle offense this year. Illinois made the greatest use of it. M*ch*g*n used it in their lone scoring drive against the Buckeyes. Washington used it at the end of the first half for their lone non-garbage time TD. LSU might find success with it too if they can run it efficiently and mistake-free.
I certainly noticed many of those things. But I also noticed that we scored fewer points than in any other game this year. So, kudos to the effective plays you cite, but I'll still take 28 over 14 any day with our "predictability."
I agree that we gain little or nothing with Perriloux in the game. He is stronger than Flynn, but not faster, and the defense will flood the box knowing we will run. Too many people are buying into the stereotype that OSU plays slow smash mouth football. It isn't true. In fact, when you look back at Tressel's big games he usually comes out throwing with a few misdirection plays thrown in, early in the game. They are a very balanced team and I do not expect them to just try and run it down our throats. They have tall, capable receivers and a top notch running back that is big and fast. He is much better than last years Antonio Pittman and was one of the highest ranked RB's in the country out of high school. We must pressure the QB, stop the run and avoid blown coverages and penalties. How did Illinois beat them. Illinois had some big pass plays from what I remember. Later in the game their running QB couldn't be stopped and their coach gambled on a 4th down and made it. We need pressure on the QB! We beat Tenn because Ainge screwed up and handed us the game. We can't expect the OSU QB to play as badly as Ainge when it is crunch time if we don't bring considerably more pressure. Florida shut them down last year with great DE's rushing Troy Smith, but we will need more than the 4 down lineman they used to sack the QB.
