It was nice to see them be able to stop a QB that has the ability to hurt them on the ground. It should be pointed out that SC had virtually no other threat to run besides Garcia, but still...they shut that door, and it was on like a neckbone.
I liked the aggressive defensive play last night. We were aggressive in the first half, as well, but SC made some plays absolutely out of their butts. Those types of plays stopped working for them in the 2nd half. The 2nd half was like an LSU defense of old, allowing only 42 yards, most of which came on that first drive when penalties (for us being aggressive) moved the ball for SC. It was nice to see a QB get up limping following punishing hit after punishing hit. Who was it that had the sack, where he jumped over the OL blocker and landed on Garcia? That was sweet. Alem, as well, is our next best pass rusher. I'm sure we exceeded the entire season's sack total last night, and this was the first time that we pressured the QB that much. It made a huge difference, and it will be key against UGA, Bama, and Ole Miss. All three of those QB's are mistake-prone when properly pressured.
The defense still sucks in relation to the types of defense LSU fans have become used to lately. They're out of position many times and it makes them look slow, which they are not. They looked confused in what is not a very complicated scheme. They're thinking too much instead of playing with instinct. The coaches must do something that will allow these guys to utilize their natural physical skills and fly to the ball.
I agree. There are better offensive teams coming up. Last night was good in that LSU did what it was supposed to do against a team that was overmatched. Georgia and Alabama won't be overmatched, so we've got to keep improving.
