An interesting article on defending the GT triple option. Defending the Triple Option: Some Basic Realities.
An interesting defense to say the least. This is the kind of game can can make an Alem or Jackson famous defending the outside. Tackling has just sucked beyond the line where half of the tackling has been take away ball. Grabbing legs would be sort of reinventing the wheel. Our blitz package has been a step late all season so please don't rely on that. Really, show some discipline and control the gaps. Safeties gotta be there. Turnovers will be key, just gotta turn em to points. Can the DC science project succeed on this one? I honestly believe so. Enough time to practice it is certain. :geaux:
i dont think we have ever defended the triple option very well.I still have nightmares of John Bond and the miss st offense shredding our defenses. That guy careered every time he played us.
I thought about the same guy when I saw Red's post. LSU never beat John Bond. Interestingly, Ga Tech's OC is named John Bond but its not the same guy.
That's what bothers me in a way. If the defense has success in this game, Miles may reconsider a change. Wow, talk about a blast from the past. My mom used to work at Miss. St and I was living in Stark-vegas when he was there, so I got to see alot of the games he played in, including him shredding our D with their option attack.
Blitzing is never a good idea against the triple option. But if they can stop the fullback dive on every play . . . then LSU has the speed to defend the run and the pitch effectively. But we need some better tackling than we've shown this year.
The key to stopping the triple option is mental discipline. Each defender has specific assignments. You can't stray or cheat.
Maybe it's my P&G goggles but I am not that worried about this option offense. IMO our weakness on defense has been our secondary defending the pass. The neutralizer to the option is defensive speed which we have in spades. As the article stated, the option exploits the defense and runs the ball where they're not. Fast defenses can close that gab quickly and minimize the gains. This is why the option becomes less effective and you go up the chain in talent. High school - option used frequently and effective College - option used as a change of pace play and as an offense in weaker conferences but generally not effective against top teams NFL - option rarely seen except for situation specific instances. I know that our defense has not seen this offense before but they have weeks to prepare for just that game. I think we'll be ok. LSU by 10
