We remember the kids who do well. For every 2-3 who do it, 100 don't. That's all I'm saying. If he can't pull the grades at a high school designed strictly to get kids into college to play ball, which is exactly what that school is for, then how will he make the 2.0 at LSU?
I am no longer counting on him. If he gets himself enrolled, great! He looks like he can be a really good player. Then again, after this season, he is one year away from being eligible to go to the NFL. He's a guy we'd HAVE to figure is one foot out the door if he ever makes it here and has success. That said, if he can get enrolled, the academic support that athletes get is phenomenal and will probably mean he can keep himself eligible.
I am fairly confident he will arrive in the spring. And we will welcome him wholeheartedly. Well at least anyone with sense would.
Serious question...for the gurus. Assuming he DOES qualify to enroll in January...do we have to sign him again?? Does he eat a scholly?? I mean, technically...he hasn't counted against our #'s yet...even though he's committed to LSU twice I think. Am I wrong on this?
Yes, he has to sign. Yes, when he signs and enrolls he would be an initial counter. An athlete doesn't count against the numbers until he enrolls, so he hasn't counted yet. If he enrolls in January, he could be counted against this year's (08) numbers if there is room, or next year's (09).
Article on Benton's plan to get to LSU http://www.2theadvocate.com/sports/lsu/26135364.html?showAll=y
per Brad Bradshaw, his high school coach at Bastrop: “To me he’ll play on Sundays (NFL),” he said of Benton. “He’s as good as I’ve ever dealt with.” Don't give up on this kid, people. He's something special. Shepard to Benton for 6. (Get ready to hear that in the years to come)
I do not think anyone is giving up on him. I just am past the point of counting on him, though. Shepard to Benton for 6 will be when Shepard is a 5th year senior and Benton a true freshman at the rare this is going.
