I'd be more upset to lose Tolliver just because he's in-state, and Brown's grades make it less of a loss. He's still a great athlete that as far as I know the coaches really want, so I'd hate to lose him.
To me, DeAndre Brown is expendable and I don't mind losing him if we're going to lose him to Ole Miss. We have a TON of high-calibre wide receiver recruits interested in us. DeAndre Brown is one of the best on the list, but he's also one of the least likely to qualify. This year, we really need to have our WR recruits qualify. Losing him to Ole Miss would hurt, but not as bad as losing him to Florida or to Bama. Let's put it this way. If we lose DeAndre Brown to Ole Miss and get Julio Jones out of Alabama, I would have kittens.
Looks like his visit went really well at Ole Piss. Now Tenn is out of the picture all together. http://louisianastate.scout.com/a.z?s=107&p=2&c=659413&refid=400&CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=24
His interview sure sounds like he is high on OM after his visit but I didn't pick up on the spurning of LSU. Don't most recruits come back from their visits sounding all gleeful?
Well, if he goes to Ole Miss he is, by definition, spurning LSU. I don't know where the LSU staff considers Brown to be in relation to guys like Owens, Surrency, Fuller, and Jarboe, or how likely we are to get those guys if we want them. The real concerning thing is Brown's academic situation. As was pointed out on a premium board yesterday, we signed 4 wide receivers last year, and almost had NONE of them qualify. The two most likely big-time guys on our board this year, Brown and Tolliver, are also in real danger of not qualifying. Tolliver is a guy we have to sign regardless because he's in-state, but I don't know about Brown. If his situation is really that bad, maybe we're better off looking elsewhere.
Well, I don't totally agree with that either. You have to take some calculated risks. If you just focus on guys who know will qualify, you're pretty severely limiting yourself and giving up on a lot of very good players who ultimately would qualify. You just have to know what you're getting into. There's no problem with losing a couple every year. That's why you over-sign. The problem last year was that we almost got SEVERELY burned, almost ending up with no new wide receivers at all. We can't take that chance again. Of course, that's a bit of an exaggeration, because we also signed a couple "Athletes" who project as either WRs or DBs in John Williams and Ron Brooks. Either or both of those may end up at receiver. But this is why we recruited Peterson. He's reportedly an A-student who will have zero problems with the Clearinghouse.
