With all the times he’s been mentioned for other jobs, you have to think CR doesn’t want it.

Is not having a DC on staff hurting us at this time of the year? I would prefer that O take his time and make a good hire instead of being rushed & forced to take someone he's not 100% on board with.

Perhaps, but the dance cards are definitely filling up. The last picks are rarely the best.

The good news in this scenario is its NOT Corey. If he fails then it shouldn't be Corey's fault.

Corey has actually stopped his ascension as a coach though. Was secondary coach but the DC who brought us a title and became a head coach himself felt he should only handle corners. He's recruited well, but we don't recruit DBs mostly corners the way Ohio State does and we certainly should. We usually swing for one 5 star talent and then fill in around them. If we miss we get burned. He's been given recruiting coordinator title but that is often to increase their pay and keep them on staff. Corey failed to impress Kirby with xs and os when he interviewed for their DC job a year or two back. Never has moved beyond position coach in college.

In the time that Corey had been at LSU Daronte has gone from small time college or the CFL all the way to working his way to the NFL ladder. He just worked for Mike Zimmer who is a notoriously difficult coach to work under as he expects greatness and rarely compliments. Add to that he coached Zimmer's specialty in defensive backs and he got Mike's endorsement and recommendation.

Every step of the way Jones has been promoted through his career. NFL position coaches can call defenses on the college level almost every time. It's just a matter of fit. Will they mesh with young kids? Will they recruit? Can they handle the immaturity? What about their abilities as a teacher? Are they likeable and will kids play hard for you? They aren't being paid like in the NFL. We saw under Bo our players clearly didn't like, trust, or respect him. They didn't play hard for him.

He seems a guy that can teach and get players to respond, especially young players who need to be taught basic fundamentals first. He's still gotta impress in the interview. Arnett did not.

Good points/info on Daronte but I wouldnt pigeon hole CR. Smart went with Grantham as a vet DC, safe bet but ceiling reached. My opinion of course.

You mean Smart went with Co-DCs in Lanning and Schumann over Corey, right?

This was like a year or two ago he interviewed Corey and came away unimpressed with his defensive concepts.

Grantham has been with Mullen at State and now Florida for years and years now.
