I don't think Woodward had access to Nielsen's contract. I think he would have to rely on Nielsen's agent to be aware of those details buried in the contract. I also agree with all of those who said O should have made a courtesy call to Sean. Bottom line, the LSU athletic administration is looking like a bunch of clowns in the national spotlight.
Just a question . Do you think a high school D C would think the LSU job would be a step up or down ???
The question doesn't deserve an answer. The idea however is not without merit. Okie lite hired a HS guy to be their OC a few years ago. I think he has actually worked out pretty well.
If you think Sean would have let Nielsen leave if O gave him a polite call I dunno what to tell you. Come on now. You don't get promoted and fought for out of spite. That's spin.
This is what I mean when I say LSU is too big for O. He has some ability but he is not polished in management of a program this size. Do you think the other elite coaches would whiff on hires this bad. He needs help and for the most part it looks like Woodard and the board or doing that but they should not be running our program at that level. When you win personnel will be taken from you and you have to have the acumen to replace them with equal or better abilities. O has consistently shown this is a problem area for him.
I’m not here to say that O is a model for public relations, but he hasn’t really whiffed hard on these guys. Nielsen was named assistant head coach of the Saints and given a raise to keep him from coming to LSU. Freeman went to ND for less money most likely because he didn’t want to uproot his family for 1-2 years only to leave for a head coaching position. He didn’t get these guys, but it’s not like everyone laughed at him before turning him down; they just made reasonable decisions that steered them away from LSU like Brady did when his time came. He also deserves some credit on the OC search. He set out to find some young guys who would connect well with the players and run Brady’s offense, and not only did he nail what he was looking for, but he got them at a pretty good discount. The fact really is that this is the first time that coaching searches have been this publicly broadcasted due to leaks and the infinitely growing media in BR. I doubt that it has looked much different in the past, but I just don’t think people were that engaged before now.
Jimbo and Tom Herman would have been our head coach if LSU always got their first coaching target. You aim for the best and you're gonna have a fight on your hands. Coaches don't care how they get the job imo, but they do care about job security, optics, and penalties. Lots of question marks around this team, yet they still almost got the two best options that were on the table since Leonhard ain't leaving his alma mater.
