If that’s the case, he may not be a great for for us. We just transitioned from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and the 2 best nose tackles we had quit on us. I firmly believe that part of the defensive problems this year were due to not having D-line & LBers best suited for a 4-3 scheme. We are now closing this yrs recruiting with players recruited to play in a 4-3 scheme. We didn’t recruit any nose tackles. Ii think switching again would be a disaster.
You have had only one sub par year under the 4-3. I’m not a football coach or expert analyst but most of the coaches that I have heard speak on the offenses of today emphasize a 3-3-5 or 3-4-4 or even a 3-3-5 but none stressed a 4th down lineman. With the passing attacks today when you put the fourth hand in the dirt you are giving up coverage hoping to pressure the QB.
You make a good point about NT but we were 2nd last by a hair so not sure how much worse it can get. I think the real problem is traditional 4-3 just doesnt work against the modern spread and RPO without exceptional talent. Im not aware of anyone reinventing the 4-3 at CFB level. Even gnome king runs 3-4 now.
The 4-2-5 is a thing too. The new rave is 4-2-5 with the 5th DB being a hybrid S/LB like Isaiah Simmons.
