Shafer did begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant to head coach Bill Mallory of Indiana -- father of our very own Doug Mallory. He also coached with Doug Mallory's brother, Mike Mallory for eight seasons--at Rhode Island (1993-1995), Northern Illinois (1996-1999) and at Illinois (2004).
