You bring up some legit points and question about a candidate like Norton. Fact is though we dont know his scheme or his ability until given the oppertunity. He has a lot of upside and could more could be learned if he were to be interviewed.
I think the thing about KNJ and what he meant by his "not finished" comment is that he knows he is not ready to be a D-Co just yet. I think he probably wants to hang around Carroll and learn some more.
I think the worst part is waiting. What would you do if you heard Peveto was fired, and Mallory was promoted?
The fact is Norton doesn't and hasn't been in the position to call the defense during games. He has no system. He's a position coach. Just because you've been a great player and a great position coach doesn't mean you're ready to step into the SEC and call the defense during the game. If Norton does have a system then he needs to get a job as a DC at a lower tier school and prove that he can dominate there and work his way up. We've all witnessed what having a position coach thrust into active game management does. We don't need potential and we don't need another experiment. We need a DC with active game management experience and some NFL experience wouldn't hurt. Norton would be a huge mistake.
I agree we don't need another experiment and that would be my argument against Norton. He may be a great DC, but you really have no way to tell and we don't need to gamble at this point. Miles should be able to get a more proven commodity with the talent we have on hand to coach and Miles being an offensive coach.
