It's a WAC team, so it is only going after second-tier recruits. The first-tier recruits go to the BCS conferences. As for NMSU, this is what their stadium looks like:
This is a no brainer choice for a guy like Walker. If he wants to be a head coach then you absolutely take the NMS job for 750K - 1M. He'll get a min of 3 years to prove himself. Even if he falls flat on his face he still makes a 3 Mil or so. Why would he take our DC job for about 400K per year? Not gonna happen if he is offered the gig at NMS.

I was just reading this: With a black AD, good credentials, and pressure in the NCAA to hire qualified black HC's, it sounds like Walker will get the job if he wants it. Come on down, Chief [Chavis]!!! They do have a black AD at NMSU:
It's official. Walker is the new HC at New Mexico State. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/12/30/nmsu.walker.ap/index.html What does that mean for Mallory?
Yeah, and after all of the firings yesterday in the NFL, it makes you appreciate how CLM is handling this whole situation, both for LSU and for his assistants. If Mallory was fired, the perception out there would be that he "sucked". And, while most of us feel he did suck, the reality is he has strengths and weaknesses, just like all of us, and does not wholly suck (kind of like a chick I once knew who really did not like BJs, would do it, but did not wholly suck. Point being, by handling it calmly, smoothly, and not reactionarily, he will be assisting Mallory with continuing on with his career, thereby bettering himself, and still being able to provide for his family. The team he ends up with will likely be excited that they attracted a former asst-DC from the national champion LSU Tigers, rather than a fired asst-DC that could not hack it at LSU. For LSU, he brings in "The Chief", and new proven assistants (hopefully, but not a done deal yet), and all is well. The Chief probably did not want to go coach for a new HC with no HC experience who would be apt to just fire reactionarily after 1-2 years if he is on the hot seat at that point (i.e. Dabo Swinney) as opposed to CLM who is experienced, and already shows loyalty to asst's by helping facilitate their careers, and coaches a team that has immense talent and already has won the NC under his wing. That my friends is the big picture and why CLM is handling all of this quite smoothly.
