I like Nix. Not the greatest, but a very solid candidate. Ole Miss 2008 - 1st year 2008 - 5th in the nation in rushing defense. 85 yards per game (2.58 yards per carry). Only given up a total of 1,020 yards rushing this year. 2007 -101st in the nation while giving up an average of 199 yards per game (4.69 yards per carry). Gave up a total of 2389 rushing yards last year. 2008 - Giving up 206 yards passing per game. 2007 - Gave up and average of 226 yards passing per game. 2008 - Giving up 294 yards per game which is 16th in the country. 2007 - 88th in the nation and gave up 423 yards per game. 2008 - 17 ppg on defense. 2007 - 28 ppg. 2008 - Lead the country this year in TFL with 106 of them. 2007 - 56th in the nation with only 76 TFL's. 2008 - 5th in the country in sacks with 37 of them. 2007 - 21 sacks which was 81st in the nation.
according to Tigerbait.com Nix has been contacted by LSU. I hope he ends up being the choice and becomes our DC. I think he is the most innovative and aggressive out of the three that were contacted.
I hope this is true. IMO Nix is the best canidate for a very aggressive defense that most LSU fans want. The other canidates seem to rely on the ol' "bend don't brake" philosophy. I personally prefer a "smash you in the mouth" defense, with exotic blitzes, etc. I think most fans would prefer that aggressive style defense we remember in the Saban years. There lots of rumors of different DC's being contacted lately(G. Robinson) so something is iminent. Time will tell.
Dandy Don's opinion from his Dec 9th post: Monday was a quiet day for any new names as possible hires for the defensive coordinator position, if the position becomes available. Tyrone Nix's (Ole Miss) name is being mentioned as is John Thompson's, the defensive coordinator at Georgia State. Vic Koenning's (Clemson) name had been mentioned as a possible replacement for Peveto and Mallory but he got tired of waiting and accepted the defensive coordinator job at Kansas State. John Chavas, formerly of Tennessee, appears to be the front runner for the job. http://www.dandydon.com/
Dandy Don's Dec 10th update: As for coaching changes on the LSU football team, I have not heard anything to hang my hat on. Paul Rhoads' (from Auburn) name has popped up as a possible defensive coordinator. Tyrone Nix's name is also being mentioned pretty often. There are a lot of great defensive coordinators available if Miles decides to make a change. It appears that Miles will wait until after the bowl game has been played. My guess is that he will introduce new coaches at the recruiting bash the first Wednesday in February. But that is only my guess, and I hope I'm wrong.
Nice obsevation. Nix also became one of Thompson's defensive coaches at USM. Thompson was DC at Southern Miss from 1992-1998. Nix was a player at Southern Miss from 1990-1993, then a defensive coah at Southern Miss from 1995-2000, then the DC at Southern Miss from 2001-2004. Assuming the reports that we contacted Thompson are true, maybe it was a search firm checking Nix's references.
