Wow. Not a single thread on the Daytona 500? I am not a huge NASCAR fan, I have a passing interest and attend when it is here in Dallas just because it is a spectacle. But I figured us being from the South there would be at least some chatter. Wreck on Lap 1 wasnt cool and I just saw Gordon blew an engine..
That's the most bizarre incident I've ever seen in a race. During a caution, they had the jet dryers out blowing debris off the track. Juan Pablo Montoya was having mech difficulties, and as he passed one of the dryers, he lost control and swerved into it. The fuel tank exploded....they say the tank contained about 200 gallons of jet fuel. Took them several minutes to put the fire out, now they're trying to dry every thing up, and then they'll be able to check and see if the fire damaged the track. They've been red-flagged over a half hour now.
That lap 1 wreck was ridiculous. No reason for Sadler to be bumping Johnson in the middle of the pack on lap 1. Danica was riding with the angels during that one. Got spun into the infield and squeezed her car between two other spinning cars with only a couple of feet to spare.
I stayed up until 1:30 last night (I am in Toronto on business). Pretty good finish.. Only sport where their superbowl starts the season.
i feel like i just ran 500 miles after trying to watch that sunday, then monday night for 6 hours or whatever it was.
Started at 7:00 ended at 1:15am... It was a marathon. It was fun watching them pack up though. MUCH better than the tandem racing of last year. Again not a huge NASCAR fan but I enjoyed watching that yesterday.
Matt Kenseth has now won 2 of the last 4 Dayton 500s... last time someone did that was Jeff Gordon in the late 90's. the only person to win 3 of 4 consecutive Dayton 500s was Richard Petty in the early 70's Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won the 2004 Dayton 500, finished in 2nd not only did he win his 2nd Dayton 500 in 4 years, he also just won the $1.6 million purse
hard to believe nobody got hurt. The driver of the jet dryer truck was transported to a local hospital for evaluation but was not seriously injured. Montoya, who wasn't hurt, said: “It burned the helmet and everything” [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIj7RI0dTRc]Flaming heck! Maybe I fell asleep on it or just missed it, but I never heard that FOX attempted to interview the truck driver, or even gave his name. They just told us that "the driver of the truck" was OK. I would have liked to have heard from him, though. Granted, they may have tried and he declined.
