I phrased it badly, we actually agree more than disagree. I'm not talking about shaming people, that's whats happening now. I'm talking about a society that promotes no holds barred freewheeling discussion in the open. Ancient Greek style debate, Lincoln Webster debate - that can't happen today because some discussions are actually against the law. No NO NO we can't talk about that -- we've decided that's hate speech. It makes it a lot easier to recruit the weak minded into bad ideas if the conversation takes place in a closed environment rather than in the open. That's what I meant by let the sunshine in. We must be able to discuss anything openly. The failings of the white community, and the failings of the black community should be discussed in the context of finding solutions, not assigning blame. For the most part the opposite is happening today.
Yes like those hateful and destructive people. They are mirror images and the left is forever tarnishing its legacy by pandering to them. (Right @sunnyjim and @gumborue ?) That still wouldn't tempt me to vote for him.
You and I are probably around the same age. Duke would also pass out a free newspaper that was nothing but hate about the black race. I had an English class with him and he never said a damn word in class, but two hours later you would see him dressed in a Nazi uniform at the Free Speech Alley screaming about how much he hated Jews and blacks.
I remember him in '69 and '70. He was like a clown figure; everyone was into smoking pot, free love, Peace signs, sex, drugs, and rock&roll. And he was into hate, anger, and bitterness. He was the freak. I was shocked when he won a seat in the La House. At the time I worked for a small company with the home office in New York. Very Jewish. They could never understand how he could win elected office. I still don't.
See I find this interesting only because I left home prior to being eligible to vote and admittedly didn't pay much attention. I mean really, at 17 I was only concerned with the next oh never mind. When I learned of David Duke it was national news because of his past and because he was never in a district that represented me or my family so I knew nothing about him like many of you do. I do however remember him presenting not only an image of "change". Like I said, I've been out of La. For a very long time and spare me the leopard doesn't change spots shit, I know he was KKK but for a bit it actually seemed like he was making a run at actually being a human. Has he gone back to the klan? Did he ever leave? Can you leave the klan or is it like the CIA?
You have a point, people do change. But in the 60s and 70s he was a full on Hitler praising Nazi; in the 80s he was distributing Nazi literature of of his Legislative office in Metairie; in the 90s he changed the words but still had the same themes; after 4 decades I've seen enough. God can figure work it out after he dies.
