A little more on pay... LSU notebook: Defensive coordinator John Chavis among six assistants whose contracts expire at end of season Advocate staff photo by BILL FEIG -- LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis watches pregame warmups before the Tigers' win over Sam Houston State on Sept. 6. Chavis is among six assistant coaches whose contracts are scheduled to expire at the end of the season. Ross Dellenger| [email protected] Nov. 02, 2014 Six of LSU’s nine assistant football coaches have contracts that expire after this season, including defensive coordinator John Chavis. Chavis’ three-year deal ends Dec. 31, — possibly before LSU’s bowl game and two months before national signing day. Assistants Frank Wilson (running backs and recruiting coordinator), Adam Henry (receivers), Corey Raymond (defensive backs), Brick Haley (defensive line) and Steve Ensminger (tight ends) have three-year contracts that end March 31, 2015. Copies of the contracts were obtained through a public records request. In the past, many of the assistants have had previous contracts renewed following the expiration of their deals. “Contracts will be discussed at the conclusion of the season,” LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said in a message to The Advocate earlier this week. LSU has the highest-paid staff in the nation, according to information from USA Today. Staff members got richer when the Tigers won a sixth game two weeks ago to become bowl-eligible. The staff will make a combined $215,000 in incentives for reaching a bowl game and could make more depending on the bowl destination. Head coach Les Miles has the largest bowl-game bonus at $50,000. Chavis, in his sixth year with the Tigers, received a $200,000 built-in raise after last season, pushing his annual salary to $1.3 million. His previous three-year deal also ended on the last day of the year in 2011. It was renewed that spring. The contracts of the five position coaches have an automatic one-year renewal at the end of their deals unless the school terminates the contract. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron has a contract running through the 2015 season, and first-year assistant coaches Jeff Grimes (offensive line) and Bradley Dale Peveto (special teams) have three-year deals that run through the 2016 season. No. 16 LSU (7-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) hosts No. 3 Alabama (7-1, 4-1) on Saturday. Both are off this week.
the lebron coming home thing may sound ok to les but in reality he has to know its not a great situation up north. recruiting not great, new AD, big 10 rendered insignificant overall. im not buying it. surely harbaugh doesnt want to lower himself back at the college level. i just cant see it.
I don't see how he doesn't consider it if the offer is right, and I'm not just talking money. Maybe he doesn't have the fire to start over, but he seems like a guy driven by things other than cash and legacy. If he still has Michigan in his heart, maybe he considers it. It'll be an immediate blow to LSU; hopefully we'd be able to rebound. Of course, Michigan might not want to throw the money at Les that getting him might take.
well if you read your post it states that the ad from u-conn might take the ad job and him and miles have history.
Les is not going to Michigan. That ship has sailed for sure on his side and probably on Michigan's side too.
A history, but that's as far as it would go. I've seen many have a history. One I know was asked to take a job, only to have him recommend who they should hire. This might be as far as it goes. A note: Northwestern Director of Athletics Jim Phillips “has been targeted” as a candidate to succeed Dave Brandon at Michigan according to ESPN’s Joe Schad. After USCE loss, Steve Spurrier on coaches: 'Everybody is safe. Most all of our coaches have 2-year contracts.'
The TREMENDOUS advantage that Stanford has is that any kid that is smart enough to go to Stanford, in lieu of a traditional football powerhouse (no offense, but it is what it is) is both smart and mature.
I know I've told this story before, but back in 2001, I called a friend of mine in coaching, an ask what he was doing. He said, like everyone else on the staff, checking my resume. This was right after George O'Leary had padded his resume and left Notre Dame. He lasted at Notre Dame almost as long as John Thompson did with saban at LSU.......LOL. My friend said that he didn't want to get his dream job and have anything on his resume mess it up. He said the fax machine was getting more work than it did on signing day. Everyone wanted name's, dates, times at schools, with paperwork to prove it.
I think Coach is 62. I am 62. Nothing is despised more than moving, again. I hate where I am, I hate my job, and I have some options, but I just can't nut up and move. Les has a great job, in a great town, adored by all except a few misguided minions. But, at 62, moving again would suck for him, too!
