Worse experimenting zone concepts against cupcakes? Is that really worse? Or is that just taking advantage of a soft schedule aside from Texas??

    Spot on

Its the reason we lost the Defensive games in the past, or games when we get down. SEC and LSU mainly is just behind the curve as a more conservative league. As you are seeing in the NFL, the new train of thinking is winning over. Fast passed, don't let the defense rest, RPO and pass to setup the run. But the great teams can switch to power and beat you down too. You have to do that sometimes to give your Defense a rest, and that will kill us at some point if we don't establish some sort of power run game or short passing type run game that burns clock, both work.

What we're watching with LSU makes me wonder if the knock against Big 12 defenses might be unfair. When your offense can consistently crank out scoring drives of 2:00 or quicker, its less time not only for your defense to rest, but for your defensive staff to coach up and enact changes to what they're seeing from the other team.

I believe that has got to be part of it how much I don't know. Aranda will have to adjust to that. One way is to recruit like Bama in that your 2nd team is almost as talented as the first team.

If we show up later I’m fine with experimenting now. We weren’t experimenting against TX and there are a lot of miscues that point to more problems than just experimenting, though.

You cannot make absolute comparisons between one year and the next. In 2018, LSU's first four games included Miami and Auburn, as opposed to this year playing Texas. While Miami was not an elite team last year, it was somewhat better than Vanderbilt, so you would expect somewhat higher offensive production from them.

On the other hand, LSU's offense has been on the field five minutes less a game than was the case for the first four games last year (33:13 v 28:20), which means giving opponents about 15% more time to score.

Then take into consideration this year's injuries to key personnel.

All in all, after these and other considerations, I am not as worried about this year' defense as I was initially, especially if we get some of those key players back.

No; subtract out all the non-defense scores in those previous seasons if you want to compare apples to apples.

1st drive against Vandy. 1st drive after half against TX. We shouldn’t need starters to not allow nearly 40 to Vandy.
