We still do this but not on every play. We have been pretty predictable this year but no one has been able to stop us regardless. Our offensive line play has improved tremendously. I do miss the pistol formation though, good things always seemed to happen with it.
Yeah, I started having painful flashbacks after about the tenth sideline screen in the first half. The limp-dick red zone performance didn't help, either. It really leaves me in awe of Kragthorpe's coaching ability seeing what he did with two QBs who spent 3+ years being run into the ground by this guy. That hire was a grand slam by Miles (as usual).
Makes sense that Crowton has historically had success his first year then down hill from there. His first year his players don't have the ability to grasp his entire offense so he keeps it relatively simple and they do well. As he increases the complexity, the results only get worse. Especially in college where you have so much turnover. You'd think he'd get the message by now.
He's usually just had an experienced QB waiting for him when he's arrived, so he could focus his efforts strictly on the plays rather than actual coaching.
....Crowton came to Oregon after spending four years as head coach at Brigham Young. He installed a spread-option offense that piled up plenty of points as the Ducks finished 10-2 in 2005. In 2006, Oregon averaged more than 36 points per game while starting the season 7-2. The Ducks, however, lost their last four games and were held to 10 points or fewer in three of them, including a 38-8 loss to BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl. "I sure miss Gary Crowton",.. not
well, we held on to him waayyy too long, but that is water under the bridge now. all's well that ends well, and we are #1 one year removed from his needed departure.
Dude was also the OC for our 2007 National Championship so he's owed some respect from Tiger fans. Still very happy to have Studdthorpe.
Kind of like Lou Tepper's defense. The only difference being is that there's no first year success with it. In fact, there's no success at all with it. He did have a couple of good moments. The Va Tech game, for one, and that play that play in the NC game where we had an unbalanced line to the left and Richard Dixon snuck out and scored. That's about it.
