Well, I have to be fair here. Mallett was never going anywhere else but Arky, Masoli was far too big of a character risk for the potential reward he offered, and we couldn't meet Cecil Newton's price. There was no guarantee that LSU would snag a stud JUCO QB and start tearing it up on offense (and there still isn't). I can't blame Les for thinking that two young QBs might be able to work through their problems, but it should've been clear by the end of the '09 season that Crowton wasn't the guy to help them do that, and cut his losses right there and then. But that's the miracle and luxury of hindsight, guys.
Dr. Saturday's article on him was spot on. Ever since he stepped in, our offensive numbers tanked, in spite of having incredible recruiting classes. I never was against JJ. I thought he was only inconsistent b/c he wasn't coached well (ie, the OC).
Jj has physical ability. Jj's problems are his inabality to make fast decisions and correctly read the defense. I don't know if it's lack of coaching jj to where he's comfortable and confident or is it jj can't be coached up anymore. He played a splendid cotton bowl game aginst a fine opponent but looked absolutly horrible aginst mcneese. We will see next year if it was jj not being coached or if it is that jj has hit the ceilng on the mental portion of the position. I can't understand why he goes from playing very well to God awful one game to the next. I don't think crowton could figure out jj's problem either. We will see if the new oc can solve this problem.Jj's ineffectiveness is the primary reason crowton lost his job with lsu. Crowton couldn't get consistant play from him. This will be the new oc's greatest challenge.
Excellent post. If Mettenberger pans out and comes in and lights it up he will make who ever the OC is a genius in the eyes of a lot of folks.
Garcia had one good game this year. Other than that, he was every bit as horrible as Jefferson or Lee. In fact, he was probably worse. Were it not for Lattimore and the dismal state of the SEC East, USCe would have been up **** creek yet again.
He didn't have to be good every game, he had to do just enough to keep the team in a position to win, and do that with some kind of consistency. And as you said, with far less in the way of supporting talent than LSU has. Jefferson has become somewhat more effective, but he and Lee are still the definition of hot and cold. The fact that LSU and USCe's passing games performed on a similar level despite the huge difference in overall offensive talent is an indictment of the OC's competence. (And don't tell me McNeese and Tennessee had top-rated defenses.)
I like word association games... ...but there's several words I don't want to hear associated with LSU ever again: Perriloux, Hill, Hallman, Tepper, and CROWTON !!! :rolleye33:. (I know it's the dreaded and never ending off season, but I'm moving on.)
