Those who make fun of this should know if you went to school and earned a degree, it isn't a gift and takes effort and perseverance. There are certain minimums required to qualify for a degree program at accredited schools and all these degrees meet or exceed them. Football players have better grades and better graduation rates than the general population. Yes they have help(tutors and the center for athletic studies) but as often noted they also spend hours working at football. The fact that they finished means they had brains and dedication. IMO they are better qualified for life in general and we should congratulate them rather than mock them.
dont be so naive. theyve always had much more than tutoring. players often went to my classes there in the 90s with tests already filled out. this shocked no one. the professors are bought and sold and there is a long lineage of this at ever college big and small.
There is actually very little of this going on today. It happened in the days of Bert Jones and Pete Maravich. But there are too many watchdogs these days in the Academic Center, in the Compliance Office, and the Provost's Office. Not to mention other students with video cameras with internet uplinks in their pockets.
I have always understood that outside of programs like engineering, law, medicine, sciences, etc., It's not the subject that matters. To employers, the most important part of the degree is not what you "learned" but that you have demonstrated the intelligence, work ethic and commitment to follow-through and complete the degree program. In that aspect, all college degrees hold value.
You're wrong. I won't go into detail, but I have had the opportunity to observe many students athletes and also the work done at the academic center. I will tell you from first hand observation that athletes are not below the general student population and, in many instances, are considerably above average. I will also tell you that the personnel at the center are genuinely interested in these kids. And, not just the all stars or major sports athletes. I have seen the staff go above and beyond to get these kids the help they need, and not just academically, when they just subs on minor sports teams.
was jordan jefferson, jamarcus or jameis winston there? I couldnt think of any dumb white athletes bc white athletes dont really exist. and by athletes Im talking basketball and football. not some title ix rich white kids sport.
If you read my post yesterday Jordan Jefferson received his degree. I would bet he got little help after he finished his eligibility. Basketball is its own subset and I wouldn't call the general population their real peer group. Too many one & done and other early departures that make the stats skewed. As MLU pointed out getting a degree shows "intelligence, work ethic and commitment to follow-through and complete the degree program" and as BP' observation and experience shows there effort that is in the Academic Center. Maybe it makes you feel better to believe the fantasy that jocks are lazy and dumb, but they would not be the successful athletes they are if that were true. To be a successful SEC level football or basketball player takes the same qualities as a honor student as well as physical tools. The Jamarcus Russels are outliers not the norm.
