Hey guys, I'm brand new to this board but I've lurked for quite a while. I've been reading a lot of threads both here and ESPECIALLY on Tiger Droppings where fans are trying to figure out why LSU just doesn't seem to be playing at the level we expect based on the talent level/recruiting classes etc. I've seen all sorts of reasons discussed like the OL isn't blocking, we aren't passing downfield, JJ's lack of experience etc. I found an article today that sort of sums up my thoughts exactly if you substitute LSU for OSU and Miles for Tressel. What do you all think?
Deconstructing: The grisly demise of 'Tressel Ball' - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports

I'm not saying this is EXACTLY our case but it sure would explain a lot of what I've seen and Miles is most definitely born & raised in Ohio and went to school at Michigan where he was introduced into coaching and tutored by Bo Schembeckler.

I disagree in many ways. First, I will start with the d. It is clear that CLM and Chavis have a plan for D. However, it is also clear we are not clicking, like missed tackle, thinking too much and little to no pressure from the front 4 which, in return forces us to go to man coverage. I can't see them throwing tons of blitz plays when we have yet to grasp the basic rolls in this scheme. I also feel that they are working jj and others in slowly, unlike lasyear with j lee.

I think with this team it is very important to start things off slow and right given the youth and coaching changes.

Sorry. Lol on my phone will post more on this.

that was posted on college sports board, well the article anyway. Tigerdroppings is not exactly the place you want to go if you want to get adults talking football. That message board is full of chicken littles, the sky is falling if we don't blow everyone out.

As far as Miles is concerned being a big 10 type coach, i think it has some validity, but, i think if Miles were at Michigan, he would be dominant.

He is doing a good job here, some say he only succeeded because of Saban's players, some say he doesn't show enough emotion, some say he is too conservative, and i actually think he is too conservative at times. But he is paid to win football games, and mainly the SEC. If we do nothing but put up W's, pretty or not, we will play for an SEC championship. That is a destiny we control, we cant control what the BCS is going to do.

Les Miles has made 1 completely terrible mistake here at LSU, and that was the promotion of Mallory and Peveto. Jarrett Lee made a ton of mistakes last year, and our defense was terrible, we lost 5 games, we were in every one of those games, except Ole Miss, and Florida after 2 and a half quarters.

There are alot of new weapons, new schemes, Jefferson is learning more of the playbook, the defense has gotten better, Washington and Vandy are better than most give them credit for. We are right where we need to be after 2 games this season, everyone is improving, and more importantly our quarterback is not turning the ball over, and we are not committing penalties! Look if we beat USL by 10 points, in a really close game, then i will be concerned about this season. But we are good right now.

i think that LSU, under CLM, will perform at a level where it is just enough to win. is this the most exciting brand of football in the country? unfortunately, it isn't. but we're winning, and i guess that is all that matters. would it be more exciting to see a team performing on all eight-cylinders? probably, but would there be enough fuel in the tank for a tough league like the SEC? probably not. having said that, UF is certainly making a case for it. maybe i'm not the happiest guy with the way LSU utilizes its talent, but if we win, who am i to argue?

What would also explain a lot is that Gary Crowton is winning with a vanilla offense and we have many surprises yet for upcoming opponents.

I like to think that CLM and LSU are on a much higher lvl than OSU.

I also feel that this is a tricky time for CLM and LSU. Like I have already said, given the particulars of this team and the events of last year, I understand the play calling thus far..

Yea, I can be the first to admit I get pissed we we dont score a TD when 4th and goal or miss some tackles, but thats just b/c Im a LSU fan and want to be the best. Once I set that aside, the way CLM has run these last two games was prob the right way to run them...

i didnt read the article, but does it say tressel and miles can no longer coach because schembechler died? id buy that. maybe we should all bring ouija boards to the games. HEY---they could put up a motivational speech of bo on the jumbo screen like bammers do with bear.

Basically a dry X's-and-O's analysis of why OSU lost to USC, the argument being that it was mainly due to Tressel's old-school, I-formation, power running up the middle style of offense and the refusal to put Pryor in situations where he can use his athleticism to make plays. All fine points. Where I disagree is how he uses that situation to conclude that power football is obsolete and modern college football should mostly abandon those types of plays. Play calling at this level depends so much on the personnel a team has to work with. Les is running 4/5 WR sets 2 weeks into the season, I don't think there's any danger of him trying to resurrect Tressel Ball in BR.

Exactly this. I've seen some pretty interesting things out of a Crowton offense and have no reason to believe that he forgot what he was doing.

That article was an interesting read, actually, but in a word, the answer to your question is "no."

After watching the first 2 outings, there are a few questions. First, I don't fault Miles with the way he's handled the games so far, so I'm not going to second guess him on the play calling. I think the O Coordinater has more to do with this than Miles. I do believe there have been times when Miles overrode some of the plays called, but I can't say that for sure.
LSU's style of play is nothing like OSU's. LSU is years ahead of alot of other schools in this regard. The most creative offenses in college football belong to lesser schools at this point in time. It gives them an advantage when they don't have the blue chip players that the big schools recruit. A good example of this is South Florida, Boise State, and yes,,,,,,,Tulane when Rodriguez was coaching there. Rodriguez's success brought him all the way to Michigan.
I have to believe that Miles is doing what it takes to win, and tuning up for the meat of the schedule. The amount of talent on LSU's team will allow us to compete with ANY program. I don't know if Miles will bring it all together this year, but he'll have zero excuses barring injurys next year. I'm not saying that we can't win it all this year, we can. But next year should be UNREAL. I believe Miles is the coach to do it. I'd take him over ANY coach in college. I'm still waiting to have a REAL opinion of our new defensive coordinator. He's had success in Tenn, I hope he can have more success in Baton Rouge.
