Basketball doesn't rank the top 8 teams going into the tournament. That's the point. Why say these schools are the 1-8 national seeds if it doesn't matter.
But basketball certainly does have Seeding that holds firm throughout the tournament. The seeding is used to lay out teh entire tournament. They don't go ahead and re-rank the teams after each round and adjust the brackets accordingly.
yes they do. example, last year, North Carolina was the #1 overall seed in the tourney. whoever beats them, takes their place in the bracket, regardless of what seed that team is. exact same thing happens in the baseball tournament. if you beat #1, you now assume their path the rest of the way. it does matter. bracket is drawn up before the 1st games are played. if 1-8 national seeds, all make it to Omaha, the bracket goes as follows: one bracket: 1 vs 8 4 vs 5 other bracket 2 vs 7 3 vs 6 winner of 1 bracket plays winner of other bracket. if a top 8 seed loses, then whoever beats them takes their place in the bracket from that point on. you don't re-draw the bracket every time a higher seed goes down, or else you'd constantly be re-seeding.
Yes they do give the #1 overall seed. But I guess it's just more for show? I understand how brackets work. But college baseball is more worried about geographic location (see LSU\Rice) than creating great competition at the CWS through seeding. So why not just pair up regionals without releasing overall seeds? The same thing gets accomplished.
they seed them a lot farther down than that, just nobody talks about them. but they are seeded just like baseball is. so is basketball. only basketball has 4 brackets instead of 8. If there are no upsets, the final 4 looks like this. 1 vs 4 2 vs 3 your higher seeds all play closer to home. most of the teams in their bracket are relatively close geographically, with only a few making long distance travels (similar to how Virginia had to go all the way to Californina). so you're complaint isn't THAT they seed them, only that they TELL you who is seeded?
