He's awesome and he's a winner, but his arm is too weak and he's too small for NFL standards. At best, take him in the 3rd Round like they did with Joe Montana (another guy without the best size or arm) and hope for the best. If nobody wants to take that gamble, then swoop him up later in the draft as a back-up QB. Colt McCoy's career in Austin, Texas has been an amazing one. Not only is it very impressive for a freshman quarterback to start at Texas, but McCoy threw for 29 touchdowns and just seven interceptions during his freshman campaign in 2006. He even completed over 68 percent of his passes. All of that success earned him a ton of accolades ... as a sophomore. Asked to throw more often, McCoy did garner 3,303 yards through the air, but he threw just 22 touchdowns and was intercepted 18 times. His completion percentage dropped to about 65 percent and he was even sacked 24 times, twice as much as he was the previous season. ... for the 2008 season. ... McCoy ended up throwing for 3,859 yards, 34 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. However, there is a reason why McCoy does not get much love from NFL draft pundits. At 6-3 and 210 pounds he is not as big as most NFL teams would like and he does not have a rifle arm. His arm is very accurate and McCoy knows how to win games, but that will not be enough to turn him into one of the top NFL prospects. He will not be a top prospect, but McCoy could still be a primetime selection (especially since he opted to return to school for his senior season). A team willing to take a chance on a player who can control the offense would likely take McCoy in the second or third round. Colt McCoy Scouting Report - 2010 NFL Draft Prospect Here's one from Sporting News: Many pundits will call him a future first-round pick, but no NFL personnel men or scouts do. NFL men are divided into two camps on McCoy, but even those who like him don't see him being selected in the first round April 22. ... Some scouts really like McCoy and say his leadership, intangibles and knack for winning will help him have a career similar to Jeff Garcia's, at the worst. At best, they could see him becoming a Tom Brady-type of quarterback with years of dedicated weight-room work to improve his arm strength. On the flip side, McCoy could really struggle to become an NFL starter. His decision-making skills and accuracy are not as good as some believe, and he shows inconsistent technique and a lack of arm strength. Plus, he rarely has played under center and thus must learn to read defenses and make decisions while dropping back. This camp has him going in the sixth or seventh round, projecting him as a quality backup. NFL Draft Dish: Scouts split on McCoy but agree he's no first-rounder - Russ Lande - NFL - Sporting News
i sure as hell wouldn't draft him. I would definitely draft Tebow before McCoy, at least Tebow can take a pounding, McCoy gets sneezed on and he is injured.
I actually think he's got a shot in the pros. He's bigger than people think and though he got injured last night, he doesn't get injured much. His arm isn't great but he's no brady quinn either. I guess we'll see.
That's because he is bigger and more adept to hard running. Don't hate too much on McCoy...everybody gets injured. Tebow has gotten injured a bunch of times in his career and missed games for it. You can get injured in anyway...McCoy would have gone back in the game if he could have.
They knew he was done right after the injury. Arm was hanging all night and Colt said it went dead. Think they were trying to keep a lid on the extent of the injury because of the draft.
Why exactly is it amazing for a freshman to start at QB for Texas when the only good QBs on the roster were freshmen?
McCoy had a 'stinger'. His arm was numb and he couldn't close his fist or grip a football. The decision not to play him was made by the coaches. Tebow was an awesome college quarterback but I believe McCoy will be better in the pros because of his release and his accuracy.
I agree. I see him as a Chad Pennington or better in the NFL. Accuracy will get you a long way in the NFL. It is what defines the best QB's in the league, (Manning, Brees, Rivers, etc.)
Calling him a pussy is way too harsh and is inaccurate. Dude turned down millions of dollars last year just so he could play in that very game if they made it. If there was any way possible he could've returned and been effective, he would've played, but I read where he was in the tunnel playing 'catch' with his dad and he couldn't even throw the ball 10 yards without it one hopping. His not returning had nothing to do with him not wanting to risk further injury for a possible NFL career. If the NFL was all he was thinking about, he would've come out last year. Congrats to the gumps of winning the game. They earned it. But you can't tell me the game wouldn't have been different had McCoy been able to play. For one thing, I think it deflated Texas' 'D' a little, at least on Bama's first scoring drive. They had been dominant to that point and had a let down on the first few series after it happened. I also don't think UT throws the pick/6 right before the half if McCoy is in there. That one play changed the whole complexion of the game. As for whether McCoy will be successful in the NFL, I don't know and I don't care. I'm not a UT fan at all.
