ARKANSAS GAME COULD BE ONE OF LSU’S COLDEST EVER NOVEMBER 11, 2014 SCOTT RABALAIS 0 COMMENTS LSU’s most famous cold-weather game is the 1947 Cotton Bowl against Arkansas, a freezer-burned 0-0 tie that remains known as the “Ice Bowl.” All-time LSU great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle once told me that was the coldest game he ever played in, college or pro. Saturday’s LSU-Arkansas game in Fayetteville may make some shiver at the memory of it one day as well. According to Weather.com, the high temperature Saturday in Fayetteville could be 32 degrees, with a low of 26 with a 40 percent chance of a “light wintry mix.” With a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2 well after the sun goes down, the temperature at kickoff could make it the coldest LSU game on record. Early research by LSU shows the coldest Tigers football game at kickoff since 1961 was LSU’s 30-6 loss to Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1992: 31 degrees. The last time it snowed for an LSU football game? That depends on how you define snow. There was some frozen precipitation coming down amid the rain at the 1997 Independence Bowl in Shreveport against Notre Dame, but it was too wet for anything to accumulate on the field. We’re planning a weather feature in editions of The Advocate later this week. Until then, check out this list of the 10 coldest LSU football games since 1961: Nov. 27, 1992: LSU at Arkansas (Fayetteville), 31 degrees, cloudy; LSU lost 30-6 Nov. 23, 1985: LSU at Notre Dame, 33 degrees, cloudy, chance of snow; LSU won 10-7 Dec. 18, 1971: LSU vs. Iowa State (El Paso, Sun Bowl), 34 degrees; LSU won 33-15 Oct. 30, 1993: LSU vs. Ole Miss, 37 degrees; LSU won 19-17 Dec. 21, 1963: LSU vs. Baylor (Houston, Bluebonnet Bowl), 37 degrees; LSU lost 14-7 Nov. 21, 1998: LSU at Notre Dame, 38 degrees; LSU lost 39-36 Nov. 30, 1974: LSU vs. Utah, 38 degrees: LSU won 38-10 Dec. 28, 1997: LSU vs. Notre Dame (Shreveport, Independence Bowl), 40 degrees, rain; LSU won 27-9 Dec. 27, 1985: LSU vs. Baylor (Memphis, Liberty Bowl), 40 degrees; LSU lost 21-7 Nov. 9, 1968: LSU at Alabama (Birmingham), 41 degrees, fog; LSU lost 16-7
Looking at those records it really won't be a factor. In those games we have a 5-5 record so it really shouldn't be a problem .
Right!!! Because those same players are paying in this game and are, therefore, accustomed to frigid conditions.
