I don't believe the coaching has been poor across the board since '07. There have been moments, certainly, when coaching wasn't its best, but that doesn't point to overall ineffective coaching. Earlier, you praised Saban, but he has flaws, too. Why did he keep attempting FGs in our '11 "game of the century" that he knew his kickers couldn't make? Why did he trot out his FG kicker at the end of the AU game last year--to attempt a FG he couldn't make? How did Malzahn know to send a man back to "receive" that missed FG? Hmm...probably because LSU did it earlier in the same season (and I've never seen it done before last year.)
I wish people would quit bitching about Alabama being in that title game. The purpose of the BCS was to match the two best teams. Can anybody really believe that either Oklahoma State or Kansas State was better than Alabama. The BCS got it right. LSU and Alabama were the two best teams by a very large margin. Alabama won and we lost. End of story. What makes you think that LSU somehow deserved the "gift" of playing a lesser team than Alabama?
Saban gets a lot of heat for attempting that 59 yard FG at the end of the Iron Bowl but I would have done the same think. The odds were that he would miss but there was likely a better chance he would make it than the chances of what actually happened. Auburn had a truly amazing run of luck last year. People were incredulous in 1970 when Tom Dempsey lined up to attempt a 63 yard field goal too.
Awesome season but that BCSNCG was an embarrassment that falls on Les Miles - I have no faith in the man to win the big one. Hope I am wrong but history will repeat.
My b. My memory is defective. Still won in impressive fashion and negates the argument that history proves Miles can't win the big one.
You're missing the larger point. LSU will not be significantly more talented than the other SEC teams remaining on their schedule his year. If coaching cannot make the difference in some of these games, it will make for a very long 2014. We are going to have to pull off some genuine upsets to have a winning division record in all likelihood, and that has not been the case for LSU in a long while. Are you confident that two tight ends, the I-formation and running between the tackles on first and second down, coupled with 3rd-and-Chavis can pull this off? I'm not. Les is capable of evolving, and he will need to evolve to keep LSU competitive in this division. I am hoping desperately to see this on Saturday.
