This is the only thing that matters to me. Oh, that and the fact that Les is the better person.:thumb:
I think in some ways it is like a business. Some people (Saban) are good at taking a struggling business and turning it around to be successful, but then they struggle when it comes to maintaining and keeping that successful business stable. Then you need someone who takes the long view, is patient and works to sustain the business (Miles). Not that I think Nick will fail at Bama, I just think his personality and MO will make sustaining success more difficult than it will be for someone like Miles. Just the thought of an old Tiger. ldskule:
In my opinion, in the 4 matchups that these 2 have faced off in. I think the only time Saban has outcoached Miles was their first meeting. Bama was terrible that year, and lost to ULM, and gave us a run for our money in Tuscaloosa. The next 3 years in my opinion, Les has outcoached Bear Jr.
So many people think coaches are in it for the money, some are. Then you have the coaches that put their families and others first. I know too many that do this, for them, its not about the money as much. Remember, hes the same coach that took his raise at Ok.St. and divided it among his assistant coaches. Les is that way.......glad hes a TIGER......
My wife and I were both athletes back in high school. We had a discussion last night about which coach would get the most out of us on the field. Both of us picked Miles -- hands down. Someone that can be encouraging and a disciplinarian would motivate us to play harder much more than a 100% disciplinarian. With Saban, you'd never feel like anything you did was good enough. That works with some people, but it also makes some people give up. We'll keep Miles. :geaux:
I've never been impressed with Saban. After reading his bio on Wiki ... I'm like ... big woop. I think the talent that natually gravitates to LSU combined with a fawning media is what made him what he is. He's kinda one of those guys who takes advantage of the situation. They say he is a defensive genius .... but I think Chavis puts him to shame. Miles without doubt is the most daring of the two. Miles knows how to win. PLUS ... as Darth said ... Miles is just one hell of guy!
They are both great coaches. As to who's better, hell, I don't know. I know who I'd prefer to have, though, and that's Miles. Looking at it objectively, strictly by the numbers, it's really close. Saban is 142–53–1 (72.4%). Miles is 98-38 (72.1%). Both records include stints at schools going through a rebuilding. At their current schools, Miles is 70-17 (80.5%). Saban is 51-11 (82.3%) Miles is 6-3 (66.6%) in bowls. Saban is 6-6 (50%). Saban has 3 SEC championships and 2 national championships. Miles has 1 SEC championship and 1 national championship (soon to be 2 and 2!). And that's without even considering all the intangibles that make Miles a better human being.
