Are you aware of the comments that the LSU fan allegedly made to Gillispie during his last visit? Do you think it's fair game to go after a visiting coaches wife? Let's face it, I doubt he was being asked over for BBQ after the game. Still doesn't make it right for him to have engaged the fan.

If LSU fans are as welcoming as you say then wouldn't your mindset be to prove that rather than make sure this visit isn't a pleasant one?

Was the supposed altercation with a LSU fan reported at the time or is this the first we are hearing of it? Was there another source besides Gillespie? Just wondering.

I've heard this story a few times. Allegedly the altercation was reported to security at Alex Box and the fan was removed.

I heard the story second hand so no telling how much is true or false.

His recent comments were just dumb but the old ones were over blown some.

Here is an article after the 1994 game:

USC coach Mike Gillespie wouldn't mind the support LSU receives at Alex Box Stadium.

"Trust me, we all wish we had these kinds of fans. They root hard for their team," Gillespie said. "And they make a huge difference in the game, make no mistake about it."

However, during the fourth inning, Gillespie got into it with some LSU fans, one of whom was ejected. Both teams were ordered at that point to remain in their dugouts when they weren't participating in the game.

"I suppose that in any group of 7,000 people there are a few idiots," Gillespie said. "But believe me, we'd love to take these fans and put them in cardinal and gold and have them root for us."

When asked early this week by California reporters to compare LSU fans to Nebraska fans at the Lincoln Regional he won last weekend, Gillespie said:"It was a sea of red, but they are not a hostile group. They're not on you, and they're not rude, and they're not vicious, and they know the Civil War is over, and they know how to act. Now, I don't mean to suggest (that LSU is that way), I really don't."Gillespie explained Friday afternoon before a practice at the Box that he meant his comments to be "tongue in cheek" and apologized several times. Too late. The radio call-in shows have been all over Gillespie as if he was Ulysses S. Grant.
