Perhaps the coaches think that Garrett is not ready. Beckwith is still learning the job and making mistakes that lead to big plays. It would do Garrett and LSU no favors by putting him in before he's ready. I also think that all the early departures for the NFL have led to us playing a lot of freshmen that would have normally benefitted from a redshirt year to learn the plays and get bulked up by Moffat. It would not surprise me for Les to try to redshirt as many as he still can.
And this is why @red55 keeps dogging you about Welter. Absolutely, he has screwed up plenty of times, but who on our defense hasn't screwed up plenty the last two seasons? Who? Seriously... Yet, you are hyperbolically vitriolic in the venom you spew endlessly about one Tiger. It's like he's the Jordan Jefferson of the defense, and you're very close to doing this with Jennings, as well. These guys chose to play for the team we all support. I don't think it's unreasonable to show less malevolence when talking about our players or coaches. FWIW, I've enjoyed reading your posts for over 10 years now, but I think this issue is a lot less about how Red (or others) feel about Welter and more about how he's repeatedly the "escape goat" with a porous run defense.
It is my understanding that Garrett had a difficult time adjusting to the southern climate. The heat really got to him. Which, got him behind in practice. Hopefully he's adjusting now and they can get him into some games.
I've always wondered about that story. August heat in the Chicago area is only about 8 degrees cooler than here. And they have equally high humidities coming off Lake Michigan. We have had many other northern players who have not needed any "adjustment" time, including Ethan Pocic who grew up 11 miles away from Garrett. I wonder if that is not more disinformation about ailments from Les.
I'm not suggesting that there isn't more to the story, but while it does get plenty hot during the summer in Chicago, it does cool down a lot at night. Some Northern folks suffer the most after the sun goes down in the South because it's still hot as hell until midnight or so.
I thought Masoli was going to have it bad going from freakin' Oregon to Mississippi. Didn't seem to be the case.
