Well, it basically sponsors Christmas. It gives time off for government employees & public schools because of Christmas. Personally, I'm never going to argue with being let out of school, but this is the reason that started calling it "winter break" instead of christmas holidays - to give the same break to everyone, regardless of what holidays they celebrate. Again, the issue isn't people or companies, but the government. People AND companies can say Merry Christmas all they please. Lots of people celebrate christmas whether they believe in christ or not because it's a fun holiday.
Because of religion. I didn't think that was a hard connection to make, being as how this conversation has been about the seperation of church & state. Personally, I have no problem with Christmas holidays - I'm just trying to explain why some might.
I work for the government. I promise you that do not have to take that day off. In fact, if you choose to work it, you get paid straight time, since you would have received that anyhow, they add time and a half to make it better for you. ex.- you make $20 an hour and would be paid that even if you take the day off. You don't want to partake in the Christmas celebration. Fine. Work. You get paid an extra $30 an hour just to let your refusal be honored. Fifty bucks an hour ain't bad. Some Jewish people take annual leave for their holiday. Even if they are needed at work, their request if honored because of their belief. You always have the right to refuse to participate without repremand.thumb: Just wondering....in areas of heavy population of ...say...Jewish people. Does the government make any exceptions for them? I wouldn't doubt it. Postal workers are off for Fat Tuesday. All other government workers too. Mardi Gras is kind of religious in some ways.:hihi:
I disagree with both statements, we disagree. I don't support governments involvement in Christianity. I'm just concerned with christianity being erased from society. Not misunderstanding, it has everything to do with the history. You are erasing history when you remove "history" from any place whether its government properties or not. It is doing away with history. About you and Deeks comments about "the Church". Being a Christian isn't about going to church, its about a one on one relationship with god. You should live your life everyday thanking god for your existance and praying for family, friends and country. Its wrong to rely on going to Church to bail you out from living like a sinner 6 days a week, it is a rut, it won't work either, some churches are worse than those that live like this. So you are bad if you are a Catholic and you don't go to a church where a priest maybe molesting someone's child, interesting thought here. There are good and bad churches, priests and preachers out there. Nothing says you have to go to churches religiously to serve god and live like the devil the rest of the week. It is my opinion that most churches of today just doesn't have it! A lot of them are just for show, Jesus said you should go in your prayer closet and pray in secret, he already knows what you want before you ask. You shouldn't be praying in public and making scenes such as hypocrites do, that doesn't mean that everyone who goes to church or pray in public is a hypocrite. It means you should have a one on one relationship with Christ just like being a brother, son, mother or father. This is nothing new, it all makes perfect sense when you think about it. Alot of churches of today are caught up in commercialism and other aspects and have truely forgotten about God or Christ or is interested in empire building. I've often wondered if Christ truely approves of these million dollar churches when the church could be built cheaper and the other proceeds could be used for better causes.
I see your point, but at the same time where do you draw the line? What if a government entity builds a christian statue with tax payer money, and then we can't remove it because it's "historical".
Maybe then that government entity misused taxpayer money and should be held responsible. People have to be responsible for their actions in our society. This is one of my biggest hangups of our world today. You have now used my argument. I have stated numerous times in this forum about where do you draw the line when it comes to government getting involved in things they shouldn't be involved in. Things often go over the line and are done to the extreme because of political correctness. Their is NO logic in the government, this is one of the things I knew ahead of time and also learned during my classes at the SBA.
