If I recall, didn't Fields leave the football team abruptly at the end of summer practice after being drafted his JR year?
Yep but it wasn't abruptly it was always a possibility and most even expected it given he was way more in favor of a baseball career than football.
Miles knew he was talking about transfer and it was an option and likely one of the reasons Miles didn't renew and set a plan for him to earn a scholarship this year. His head was elsewhere and it showed in his preparations.
What I'm wondering is this going to be the inevitable straw that breaks CLM back? Meaning if JJ goes down, JL is still not cutting it in the SEC and ZL isn't ready then worse case scenario here is Miles sticks with JL and he continues his role as "pick 6". That being said I first of all hope that JJ is good the whole year and there is nothing to worry about. Second I hope JL got the pick 6 bug out of his system for good so if we have to bring him in it just is a blip on the radar and nothing season ending for us. Finally hopefully ZL hangs around long enough to even have an impact. I mean think about it if you already knew you could sign a 6 figure contract and you haven't even started college, well seems to me that there would be little motivation to hang around. Now if he does hang around and plays for a couple of years then he has most definitely earned respect from me. Back to my original point, if things go south and with Miles being on thin ice as it is do you guys see this thing as being a potential nail in the coffin? I mean you can't argue this is a huge gamble.
this has been part of my argument and why i feel clm had no choice and his hand was forced. no one knows better than miles that if our qb's go down and there is no back up its his ass that is fried.
CLM can't make players have a will to compete (Miles would probably say it that way:grin and keeping him could do more harm than good if he is just going through the motions and talking about transferring, etc.... So I definitely agree his hand was forced. It wasn't like Garrett got something in the mail and this happened all of a sudden because there are sources out there saying they had numerous discussions on the matter. Garrett didn't want to do what he had to do to earn a scholarship so that is all he could do in that situation. Sure it hurts depth in the future but that can be fixed with extra additions. All it takes is one player to come in fro Juco or a recruit to secure the depth chart when the time comes, at least we know what we need now instead of later. Miles said at a TAF event a few months ago that Bailey was #3 on the depth chart and now if Lee comes in that means he was 5th on the depth chart based on Lee's performance so far during summer 7on7s.
fully agree! this would have hurt much more a year or two down the road when we were counting on him being ready to step up. at least now there is time to try to plug the hole or agressively recruit at that position, which may be easier if there is not a log jam.
